The waiting list is very short at the moment for submarine jobs so you will get in a lot quicker. I started my application in April and I have my entry date for November

The SF thing was a load of wildly-misjudged recruiting nonsense, and I wondered how many people would see through it. That said, submariner professional standards have to be high given how complex the kit is and how hostile the operating environment is. Submarines are also still cramped and spartan to the modern eye.

As a result, it is mentally demanding and not for everyone. It does mean that a set of submariner's dolphins is something to be immensely proud of. I got pinged to be a submariner and didn't do it for a huge amount of time. I'm proud to have done it, though, and it set me up very well to go outside.

In all cases would you put yourself forward to go on a sub, or can the navy post you on one without your say so?

You can be posted - 'the needs of the service' come before your individual preferences. The RN's argument is that you are a volunteer. If you're violently opposed to boats then the RN is perhaps best avoided. Having said that, if you take the long-term view, submarine service makes good professional sense. I'd employ an ex-submariner over an ex-GS or ex-RFA, as, starting with SMQ (dry), the submariner is having good professional standards instilled.

I have to admit it, but despite sitting here in the sun gulping G&Ts by the gallon, if they gave me a big fat cheque for 3 more years I'd have to VERY seriously consider giving it a bash! Even if it is totally shit, and 'Northern' based, it is only one draft when all's said and done.
