Where will I be based? (FAA)

Hello all,

My first post here so apologies if it's in the wrong place, and if I'm using any incorrect lingo. I have searched the forums for an answer but am struggling to find one. I've spent the afternoon reading through the forums and have already got a load of new info to help with my decision, so thanks all for that.

I am very interested in applying for FAA pilot (rotary). I appreciate that when at sea I could be anywhere in the world, but what about the rest of the year (is the term "alongside"?)? I understand the two FAA bases are Yeovilton and Culdrose, but is there any way of knowing which it would likely be initially (or indeed if it was somewhere else entirely)?

Also (this might be a daft question), are there different arrangements for living on and off base?

Background: I currently work in construction but due to coronavirus and my position within my firm I am expecting to be high on the list if redundancies are made, but this would likely be a blessing as I don't really enjoy my job, and pilot has always been my dream career. I currently live in Plymouth with my fiancé, so a move down to Culdrose would be very doable for us, and Yeovilton would also work as she already has relatives in Somerset, so in either case we would hope to buy a house and live together when I'm not at sea.

@Drafty??

To be fair, these are the sort of questions you should know the answer to before even thinking of joining up and attending the AIB!

A quick google search would bring up all the answers and well as the RN website.

I don't think there is any definitive answer to your questions really.
You join the Navy and you basically go where they need you. Ashore and at sea.
You are correct in saying the two main rotary bases are VL and CU - But!!! To which one you would be based would be impossible to determine until very close to the end of your flying training. It rather depends on how you do - where you're needed and what posts are available.
As most things with the forces. Service comes first, your family life is secondary.
Good luck with your dream career. Many many hurdles to jump.Least of all the dreaded Aircrew Medical.

@Waspie thanks for the advice. Even if it is impossible to tell, it's always nice to be certain that there will be uncertainty!

As I understand it, the aviation medical comes after AIB - if you were to fail it, do you then have an opportunity to "select" or be considered for a different role? Seems like a waste of resources to spend on putting someone through AIB only for them to fail the aviation medical and then send them on their way.

Firstly, you can be certain of the uncertainty!!
As for the AIB and ACM, take that up with the powers that be!!
If you fail the medical you may still wish to remain in the Navy albeit not as a pilot!!! Choices.
You have to remember this isn't an official RN site so your going to get opinions and not facts.
Our @soleil is one of our contributors who will give more official guidance but in the first instance you really need to get advice from your careers advisor/officer. Then you will get your info straight from the horses mouth.
