Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Hi

I am in process of applying as WEO I'm doing my masters in Civil Engineering (yeh yeh i know) and have my sift interview soon though am questioning on branch of engineering having been on POC visit, thinking about future prospects and career, what I want to do and get out of RN.

As a MEO are there more/longer opportunities deployed at sea (since this is what I really want to do as much as possible) since there are more "unarmed" ships than frigates and destroyers etc. Also I know from a friend training at Collingwood that there are opportunities with UK intelligence/security as WEO due to secret nature of the job though I am thinking being charted with IMech as a MEO would be more useful in civie world esp with civil eng degree? Also i think i am more mechanically minded than electronically.

Your help, advice and opinions are all welcome as i really wanna make the right choice!!!

Cheers in advance guys n gals

The sea going opportunities are the same for WE/ME. If you are more comfortable with being an ME, then choose that branch.

Interesting comment about there being more 'unarmed' ships in the RN - you might want to check that before your sift interview - there are 4 survey vessels, not including Gleaner, and I'm pretty sure we have more than 4 FF/DD/SSNs etc.....
  3. perhaps it was cynicism...

He's not allowed to be cynical until he has joined.......

  5. I think you'll find that now the White Navy is Grey they also have weapons and even "Make Believe" wartime roles. However no commissioned WEO

? Will you appear on electronic charts? IMech? IMechE perhaps? Why not ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) who would seem a more appropriate professional body, unless you have a first degree that is more clanky like. I know one RN engineer with a civil engineering degree but civil engineering has more to do with the stuff ships crash into than ships.

Would this friend be called Bond, James Bond?

Thank you. I happen to know that the survey fleet has been grey for some time now, and I wasn't counting small calibre self defence weapons. All of which means that the OP was even more inaccurate...
  8. Ha have just realised wrote charted obviously meant chartered! Yeh thanks for the cynicism i realise i'm doing a civil engineering degree theres not much i can do about that now I chose it at 18 with the information and experience i had available at the time, which i do not regret and at the end of the day you, the RN, are offering places to people of all engineering disciplines as well as physics based degrees.

By unarmed i meant attack ships as such and was not referring to BOATS such as SSN as SSBN ;) haha no his name is John english he is training as WESM said that there are future roles in what i guess Mi5/6 etc

Yeh theres limited info on roles other than asking you serving personnel for advice and such, cheers

    *oh other than wiki ha

  9. Don't forget that the WEs have just taken over the CIS branch so there is the whole Comms, Networks, Info Systems angle too.
  10. Might be worth mentioning that as of last month new MEO's aren't particularly desireable in recruiting and the real push is for WEO's at the moment... but if you have a preference of MEO and aren't offered a place you could make it clear you will consider WEO as well/instead (I do not know much about the differences in these specialisms and you ought to get in touch with a serving MEO/WEO to discuss it with them!).

Of course offering to be diverse like this can either (1) make you look really keen - positive - or (2) make it look like you don't care that much about your branch - negative. Your call. Best of luck with sift.

The big difference between MEO and WEO is the amount of man made fibres you are willing to wear.

  12. So who wears more then MEO or WEO? am guessin MEO beacause of overalls ha

Just to say passed SIFT really well said i had excellent service knowledge of the fleet and everywhere we are in the world woop woop also that it is good to know what specialisation of engineering you want to do though it is not essential per say

    thanks for help
  13. I think guns was referring to which ones buy their civvies in C&A! I'll let you decide.
