Weapons engineer - CIS

I am quite familiar with the weapons and sensors specialisations in the WE branch but not so familiar with the CIS specialisation. What kind of jobs/tasks is a CIS WE dealt with day to day within the fleet?

Yes I am, I understand they handle the communication side of engineering like internal communications but haven’t been told much else (we were not given branch briefs at Raleigh due to covid). I was just after some more information about the specialisation ready for when we start learning about it and come to putting in our preferences.

That’s fair enough.
Sorry mate. We already knew our trades etc before joining. Didn’t know you didn’t until you started part two of training nowadays.
I’m sure there’s a comms rating lurking somewhere on here.
Or, maybe @crash_evans can help. He’s a TAZ ape, but more in the know.

Surely you’d know what you’re getting into for a career??
Don’t get me wrong, obviously, I knew **** all about radar as a 16 year old. But, I knew I would be doing radar, a bit of gunnery and some other shit when I signed as an AW.

No, only just started phase 2. Been given loads of helpful information on the weapons and sensors side of WE but haven’t really been given much about CIS as everyone I’ve asked seems to just say they aren’t 100% sure .

No I joined Raleigh as an AA (WE), we do an enabling course to do the basics in all 3 areas of WE and then choose a preference into which one we’d like to do. At the moment I’m looking at picking sensors but I’d like to have a good knowledge of all 3 before choosing. There were no WEs at Ral to speak to and we’ve only been at collingwood for a week (intro week) so haven’t really done any WE work.

Right! It might have been better to lead with that. So you will be doing all three course but condensed. I wouldn’t worry about getting second hand dit’s on here. You will get the gen when you start your course at CWD. You will then go to sea and do some sea time to consolidate. You will be taught it in good time.

I would be more conscious about being a Probationary Leading Hand and not coming across as someone that wants to stamp all over the lads/lasses or trying too hard to be a LH. I had a couple in my AA course and we soon got rid of them. It’s not something we are looking for.

Just knock the skipper up on joining. And then say “I’m the knew killick of the mess in the Zoo”.
Then, just waltz into your new domain and into your new senior position.
I wouldn’t even bang the hatch as you go down there.

On my latest stitch draft, I didn’t even go to Skippers joining call. It was only four months and I knew he’d come into the sound room and tell me how to find submarines. Which he did 10 mins after tail wet.

I asked him if he wasn’t busy doing ‘other stuff’?


No CHOPS, I’ve got as long as you need to help. I left the sound room to make a wet. The lads loved that.

Only her indoors calls me that since she got her WO1’s. Cheeky mare. I’ve still got 2000 more sea days than her. I often pull that card, she then retorts with why don’t you volunteer to go to sea out of turn as I want new sofa*

*something we are discussing now.

No rounds thankfully, I do go on skippers puns when I have a bottle of rum and assume the velociraptor pose on the sofa with the dog.

That sucks. Beer bans ashore suck harder than 2C/D on a T23 with the recirc hatch shut in State 1 ZULU.
