Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Been reading some pretty negative comments online about the branch that i'm about to sign my life over to.
So is anyone out there willing to post anything positive about being a warfare specialist with out telling me I'm going to learn to be an excellent painter or ships cat???

The Warfare Specialist is one of the largest trades in the Royal Navy. It is therefore statistically likely the disaffected individuals who wish to air their greviences will appear more vocal.

    1. There is no Technical Training however you do earn accredited NVQs which are transferrable to the Civilian job market.
    2. You will keep watches (shifts at sea) & gangway (sentry) duties whilst the ship is alongside.
    3. There are menial elements to all jobs, the Warfare Trade are no more put upon than any other trade.
    4. We don't fly a team of cleaners or surrogate mothers out to clean-up after you- you have to do it yourself.
    5. The Warfare department typically look after the Upper Deck areas of the ship which are open to the elements. Warships cost about £1M per metre - so we have to look after them. Moving bits on the upperdeck are protected with oil or grease. Static bits are protected from the elements by a barrier of paint.
    6. Upperdeck maintenance is usually carried out when the weather is appropriate.

You are indeed correct however I've only just got used to not using expletives when conversing with Officers, so bear with me. :D
  8. Although I wasn't a warfare specialst I was an I was in an OM in the abovewater warfare branch.

I enjoyed being in the warfare branch, I enjoyed being a my job as radar operator, gunner and WE.

Yes I know they no longer do everything or as some say jack of all trades master of none. But I was a Nav's Yeo, QM, and boat coxswain (which I enjoyed doing on fish patrol).

You will be given shit for being a dabber, but all branches take the piss out each other, just some can't take it as well especially if they get given new epaulettes lol

If you want to join the warfare branch go for it. It's an enjoyable branch (or was I don't know nowadays).

Funnily enough, met a previous boss recently, but couldn't remember the context in which we were acquainted. Thinking he was a civilian friend and as we were both in a civilian setting, he was greeted with:

    "Alright fatso ?"

It dawned on me that he was actually quite a senior, and serving Officer when he replied:

"Ah Chief **'ninja'**, it's good to see you still treat Officers with your usual healthy disdain."
