Warfare specialist opinions

Hiya, as some of you might know I originally applied as an ETWE (cis), but after completing the NSRT I decided to switch to Warfare specialist, I’m mainly wondering which service is best for this role the surface or the submarine fleet?

You will have to do more training if you pick submarines, and in submarines you tend to not see day time for quite some time on deployments. And on the surface fleets I would imagine you would see day time more than a submarine.

Also I believe that surface fleets tend to go to different countries to dock and you would be able to explore more places if you were surface.

However, it would be up to you what your preference is, could you go for months without sun light? All these factors you should take into account, rather than speculating to see which is better. Do what suits you.

I have given my opinion based on what I have been told by previous serving and ex serving personnel in regards to what they have told me before. I am also an ex-serving solider, who have spoke to plenty of serving personnel giving me a good understanding on what it's like on a surface fleet and submarine.

Using the terms "I believe" and "I would imagine" gives the understanding that these are based on opinion, based on what I have been told previously, therefore not intending to give a factual answer, rather than an opinion which could hopefully shred some light on the question.

Good intended then, but unless you've been there and done that you'll never quite understand what it's all about, everyone has a different take on things as you would know from your Pongo days, some things some people hate and others lap it up - no negative criticism intended:)

As a former submariner with 30 years on boats and 3 years surface, the biggest difference will be the amount of foreign runs ashore you get, if you have a bomber draft that will be zero runs ashore. However you will get paid a lot more and tend to have more responsibility as there aren't many of you, as opposed to the complement on a T45 for instance.

You'll also be based in Scotland if you go boats.

As this is the Joining forum posters want genuine info, not assumptions, mother of all fcuk ups and all that. Many of us 'older' members have been chastised for doing the same in the past and it's just not helpful.

My comment wasn't an attack, just tying to ascertain wether or not you were talking with experience or hear say. To a newbie, it could make a big decision when choosing which way to go.

Now my background is FAA, but I do know there is a massive difference between surface and submarine service but as I have no experience in that field I stay quiet. Now start talking Wafu and I'm straight in there!!!

My last ship before going into boats was the old Bulwark. I once went a couple of weeks without seeing the upper deck!

Boats - loved the life-style - the extra cash was just a welcome addition! Much less formal and more individual responsibility. And when there are runs ashore, they are brilliant!

Need to choose between Bombers and Fleet boats - both have unique advantages and disadvantages.

I only did 23 years, so what do I know?

Ah, But have you ever tried it when you don't know where the boat is, the boat hasn't got its noise maker turned to max chat? Or at PD with all mast raised? Y'know, for a bit of a clue! ;)

How long do you go away at sea for? Or does it depends on which boat you’re on etc?

Depends on the programme, bombers normally 3 months, SSN's can be any time, longest I did away was 6months but had a few jollies on that one.
