Wanting to Join the RN

I'm 90% sure this is the right place to post D: If it isn't, I apologise in advance.

I am a 21yo male and I'm currently an IT technician at a secondary school. I want to join up and be a part of the surface fleet.
I am currently looking at warfare specialist, marine engineering technician, or a weapons engineer.
What I need to know, is if I signed up and applied January, when could I expect to be able to join? Also I would have to work a months notice at my current job before I can officially leave. I don't wan't to be stuck in between with no job, waiting to enlist.

If you want any more information, please just ask. I do have a few more questions, but don't want to bombard anyone if this is the wrong place to ask.

Thank you in advance,

I guessed that part haha, I didn't phrase it well.

If I quit my current job today, I would have to work till 19/12/15 until I can leave. I just don't want to quit, and have no job while waiting for the RN.

Are there specific recruiting dates in the year?

Do not quit your job until you have a START date for the RN
Unless of course you wish to live on benefits with yer rent and council tax paid, free dental care and be far better off than you are now in a low paid job:(

Okay then, it would be easier, but I don't want to live on benefits tbh :(
If I applied online, would they then give me start dates and so on?

Different branches have different waiting times.

Over-subscribed branches, with more applicants than training places available, will naturally take longer to get a join date than shortage category branches.

Start dates fluctuate on a weekly basis because there are finite numbers required. Very often applicants change their minds or manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by making themselves ineligible at the 11th hour by failing to meet fitness or eligibility requirements, not disclosing existing medical conditions, crap personal admin or acquiring criminal records, etc.

The best you can hope for is a "best guess" so do not submit notice until you have passed PRNC - an alarming number are arriving fat, unfit or unable to swim and getting binned.

Best guesses for WS, ET(ME) & ET(WE) are currently 7, 5 & 14 months respectively for ships or 3, 4 & 3 for Submarine branches respectively. It will probably change tomorrow.

Thanks for this Ninja! I'm still making sure I'm 100% fit for when I go for the PRNC. When I am ready, should I go to my AFCO, then get the PRNC dates from them?

Thanks for the rough waiting times, Ill probably go ship WS or ET(ME). I'm leaning more towards ME though. Does this forum have more information on ME's?

Not sure how you feel about your current job and skill set but if you wish to continue with IT then ET(WE)CIS,or whatever it's called this week, would suit you.

There are a "fair few" threads kicking about regarding the different branches and what they do.

Anything with the word technician in the title carries more transferable/technical qualifications.

hammers: I did have a look at WS, ET(WE) and CIS, but I wanted something more physical and hands on. I did mechanics at college and really enjoyed, but then did IT, and that's what I'm now in.

Ninja: Alright then, thanks, Ill have a look at a few of the threads and see what I can find.
