Basil, use the PM function to contact them
Thanks Janner, I did just that - now it's wait and see!
I guess from the link that you're ex-boats? Same here, after New Waltham I served a couple of years on the Fife and then headed into Dolphin. Bombers from there, until invalided out in '85.

I was due to join New Waltham in 1973. For some reason, I'd been followed there by one of the most hideous women in Pompey. Managed to **** her off at the station and thought to celebrate - was found drunk and incapable in Station Approach, Grimsby.

Night in cells, and after the ensuing court case - fined £5 - on my 18th birthday, was escorted to NW by one of the lads who'd been sent to get me, as it turned out we came from the same small village.

One look at my dishevelled state by the boss and I was sent back on leave, with some extra sponds, to await a redraft.

A fellow matelot and myself, late 1970's, climbed the tallest mast at about 3 a.m. one Sunday morning after a night on the lash! Crawled under the surrounding fence to get in. Took us about half an hour to get to the top. Crazy or what! We knew they were going to be pulled down to make way for house's. Just had to do it before they did. The GY Evening Telegraph had a front page article on their destruction, with pictures. I was a New Waltham resident at the time. Left the Navy in 1978. Climbed it about that time. Aged about 24. I have almost finished writing a book on my early years, plus Navy etc. and one thing that's missing before I finish it, is more detail on the station. In particular, how high was the tallest mast? Would love to get a copy of the GY Evening Telegraph in question. Hope you can help.
Cheers
Noddy

I was on Small Ships Support Group Chatham and we did the Catering Support for New Waltham and Forest Moor - so visited them both a few times - went to watch Grimsby play one night in the rain - have no idea why - the pong from the trawlers was so bad you could almost touch it

My parents were both in the RN. We came back from Hong Kong in 1955, I was born there, then we lived in New Waltham until 1957/8 then parents separated. Never saw him again. Any information about the base, ie Road name or who to contact, would be most welcome. Many thanks in advance

I, too, was at SSG. Do you recall the CO ( Wadman ), or a certain LSA who had a run in with a certain (Un)Civil Serpent called Arnott on the Maidstone ?

Wadman rings a bell - was the LSA nicknamed Lurch - had a thing about amputees and lived with one ??

Thing I hated about SSST - midnight rounds on the Triumph with just a torch and reinforced undies........................
