W. Sussex County Times: "Be A Volunteer Reserve Like Oliver"

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. The terminology 'volunteer' is misleading I think. For someone with no connection to the military it sounds like you give up your time for free, only when you read deeper would you perhaps realise; but if people don't fancy doing it for free they might not read on that far. Just my thoughts from my social group and reactions my colleague used to get when he told people he was a Reservist- many were shocked he got paid and all!

Agree - the number of people I've spoken to who think reservists work for free is quite worrying. There needs to be a much stronger message in the pr campaign - one military full/part time. Otherwise it feels like the vaguely militant wing of the Boy Scout movement!

  3. Except that they tend to wear uniform from day one, and our guys are still waiting six months in :)
