Visiting an aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy (Open Day Event?)

Discussion in 'Current Affairs' started by Annika, Mar 17, 2011.

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Hello everyone.

First of all, I didn't really know where to post my thread. If it doesn't fit here, could anyone please move it to the right category.

    Now my question:

on the RN website I have read about the "Open Day Events". As I can remember, there was a Open Day Event in Germany as well some years ago with an aircraft carrier open to the public.
As we really would like to visit an aircraft-carrier I would like to ask, if there will be the possibilty to visit a CVS of the Royal Navy in the near future somwhere in the UK or even in Germany?

I would really appreciate, if anyone could give me dates or other information.

    Greetings!

  2.:cry:You will be struggling on that one Annika.... we dont do aircraft carriers any more!!!!!

  3. Hallo Annika,

No visits by Ocean or Illustrious to Germany that I know about; Illustrious is in refit until the summer. Ark Royal was in Hamburg just before Christmas but she is now out of service :-(

We've not been given the details of public events involving ships this year in the UK either.

The only ships which regularly visit Germany are the minehunters with the NATO force, but they are in the Mediterranean at present. They typically visit Kiel and ports on the Baltic coast.

    Gruß aus England!
    Viel spaß!

My mum used to swim out to aircraft carriers!

    (it is said ...)

  6. Best bet is to catch a train to France and have a look at theirs.

We had some once upon a time!!

  7. Charles de Gaulle. ( Normally welded to the dockside in Brest )

But it does float, does have aircraft, and is in commission

  8. Thank you everyone. The Hamburg event was the one I had heard of, but I missed this one :-(

France would be my next attempt, but i would prefer england, as I have some friends living there. I Also talked to the german army, but as germany doesn't have any aircraft carriers at all there is no chance here:-(

Still, if anyone knows any dates in the UK feel free to post them ;-)

    greetings!

12th October, my birthday. I believe the Germans have that date also.:thanks:

    Aircraft carrier-wise, you'll need a 2016, 2017 & 2018 calendar.

  10. Update.

Sky have just said the French carrier is being preped for ops!!!!

'Fraid you will have to do some more homework Annika!!!

  11. To be fair, CDG has provided CAS (Close Air Support) for troops in Afghanistan on five occasions over the past ten years (link) and was even escorted by HMS Cumberland over the New Year during her most recent deployment, the start of which was delayed by 16 days owing to technical problems.P.S. RN carrier-based air could have been fully acclimatised/worked-up over the past few weeks and operating over Libya within an hour of the UN Resolution being passed if we still had it to deploy.

  12. Rather a tongue in cheek reply by myself viz CDG. Agree that RN carrier based air could have operational within hours if we had any, but we don't. Its about time that politicians learnt the basics..."You can't dine out, if you haven't any money to pay the bill."
