Vehicles on Aircraft carriers HMS Hermes and Invincible

At the same time 1980 the RN stopped issuing pencils to Radio Operators for writing down signals it was provide your own. They also automatically cut any stores ordered by 50% for stationery items to the communications centers.

Same thing happened onboard the Bulwark, about the same time, Stores announced that all Stationery Orders would be cut by half! All departments then order twice as many Stationery Items as they needed!

I wonder if anyone can help or suggest a route to follow for some research.

I own a Light weight Land rover which seems to have gained some interest from people who are interested in Ex military vehicles. The unusual thing about this Land Rover is it has Royal Navy livery and is one of only two known to have livery.

The Land Rover was made in 1974 and although the RN vehicle record is incomplete it looks like it was attached to HMS Hermes until 1983 and then HMS Invincible for 2 months in 1985. Registration was 03-RN-23. One other strange thing was it had it's top speed restricted to 30mph while in service.

Questions I have regard why an aircraft carrier would have a specially liveried vehicle attached to it and it was definitely the ships vehicle and not for instance a Royal Marines vehicle on board. If anyone has any knowledge of the vehicle and/or what it was used for as well as any routes for further research it would be most appreciated.

I drove this Landrover in 1980 when Hermes was in refit, used to bomb around the dockyard in it, delivering stuff to the ship.

In 1976 Ark Royal carried an ary landrover complete with pongo major and a pongo corporal one name of Paddy mcgurk if I remember correctly
This was for CBGLO (Carrier Borne Ground Liason Group) the Pongs would be putashore to control any carrier air operations against ground forces.
The major would control the aircraft and Paddy would read porn or comic books.

Ark had a brand new Rover (820 I think) that was trashed by a Harrier Fuel tank!!!
Unless it is another incident the Ark incident was the Captain's car, a new Jag.
2 Wrens from 801 were removing a Common light series bomb carrier from the hangar racking. They held one as they undid a lashing and then found out that they had undone the wrong ones as different bomb carrier fell from the racking.
The Captains Jag was parked underneath the carrier that fell. There was a bit of a scratch on the bomb carrier but the roof and doors of the car had been caved in.

Edit for spulling.

That later became the inspiration for an episode of "Only fools and Horses" about a chandelier. :)

Might be the same incident, I was on Seakings then (820), thought it was a fuel tank but could have been a CBLS. I'm sure is was a Rover 820?

I was on the bags and in the hangar at the time.
I don't recall seeing a rover on board, it was always a Jag as captains car.

We had a blue RN plated Land Rover on the ANTRIM all the time I was on there in the early 70s. Can't remember more than that, but I think all the 'big' ships carried one. Mind you, in those days, they also had a Captain's boat, which was a very posh bit of kit!

Yep SB, I remember the Landy on Antrim. Tried to find it on Google, but only found this pic with the title: Westland Wessex lands aboard HMS Antrim (D18) in the Mediterranean Sea in 1972.

I think we were both onboard for the Med trip, but I don't remember the Mini Van being embarked. After the Med trip we went on a Far East trip (sailed 29 Dec 1972 IIRC) and definitely had the Land Rover embarked for that fun-filled excursion. Also, I think the Wessex was named Humphrey.

Time to resurrect a 10 year old thread.

I had an email last week and a photo has been found of two Lightweights, mine the one on the left and another on Hermes deck sometime I estimate between 1976-79. The photo can be found here http://www.na3t.org/road/photo/VS03128 , does it jog anyone's memories?

The scar on the left hand headlight box is still there so I know mine was definitely Deep Bronze Green not blue in service, the other likely was as well.

Fife similar, even had a duty landrover driver every day alongside.

Passage to Gib, B of Bisc was heavy rollers but not bad, Leander class sailed day after us and caught a right corker, when she pulled into Gib the mini van she had strapped to the flight deck was squashed flat.
I think the ship in question was possibly the Juno, if it was in '70 or '71. That's what happened to ours on the 'Raving 'J' '
