Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. A belated happy anniversary to the nuclear powered submarine.

On January 21, 1954, Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower broke the traditional bottle of champagne across her bow as NAUTILUS slid down the ways into the Thames River.

  2. To avoid any confusion, that's the Thames in Connecticut, USA.

  3. BNM, The CO of the boat wrote a book 'Nautilus '90 North' the year after the sucessful (real!) mission to the North Pole, I found a copy in a wee bookstall in the Glasgow Barras a few years ago, worth trawling the internet for one. Their first run ashore after the trip? Portland (the English one)

  4. There must have been a heck of a party in the Green Shutters. Can you imagine the barmaid saying, "I'm sorry but we've run out of ice."

  5. UK TV History channel did a 1hour documentary of the mission. Lots of original footage.
