Please don't consider this ignorant, the topmost extrusions (periscope area) of the submarine- are/were these retracted prior to an ice break or can they withstand breaking 3ft of ice?

It's called the fin (sail in yankspeak) and their strengthened for under ice ops for that specific purpose

It's called the fin (sail in yankspeak) and their strengthened for under ice ops for that specific purpose
Nice. Would be fantastic to witness the spectacle top-side as it breaks through.
