Military officials on Aug. 6 identified a sailor killed in southwestern Afghanistan as Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Anthony C. Garcia.

Garcia, of 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, from Marine Corps Base Hawaii, died Aug. 5 while supporting combat operations in Farah province, Defense Department officials said in a news release.

Garcia, 21, of Tyndall, Fla., enlisted in the Navy in July 2006, arrived in Hawaii earlier this year and deployed overseas with 2/3 in May, officials said. The battalion is operating as part of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade.

His military awards include the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
