Hi, I am 16 and I am short sighted although it does not make me blind, when I wear glasses I can see perfectly, will I be accepted as an aircrewman, always been a dream as my brother was,

Thanks

Aircrewmen require good eyesight as they are the effectively the pilot's peripheral vision from the rear of the aircraft. This is obviously particularly relevant when carrying out search and rescue operations, when flying at night, and when landing in restricted spaces. For these reasons, and others, the medical standards for entry for all aircrew personnel are particularly stringent.

Careers staff aren't able to give definitive medical advice as they are not medically qualified so ultimately, it's the medical examiner's call. Do not let it stop you applying but be aware there may well be issues along the way and it maybe worth considering alternative jobs within the Fleet Air Arm, just in case. Before you think it...laser surgery under age 22 is a bar to entry for any branch.

Best of luck.

Thanks, could you recommend a certain role for me? I don't want to be stuck doing something I don't like, I like combat but I'm not sure which roles in the navy will see combat

It depends what type of combat appeals. As the name implies, the Armed Forces as a whole are intended to be used for combat operations but by different means.

If you mean on the ground at the sharp end then obviously Royal Marines are reputedly amongst the very best in this role ashore and afloat

If you mean using shipborne weaponry, then Warfare Specialist or Seaman Specialist are the people that bring weapons to bear in the external battle. I'd never thought of this when I joined but the first combat situation I was involved in made me realise the weaponeers are the heroes of the hour in a shooting match.

Then again, there's the combat involved in fighting the internal battle on a warship. On a warship, everyone goes into battle, we don't leave people behind.

If you are interested in aircraft, technically minded and want to work in support of combat ops ashore and afloat then working as an AET with Commando Helicopter Force (CHF) maybe up your street.

I joined as what is now ET(ME) and have never been called upon to fire a weapon in anger but I've been on the receiving end of enemy munitions in abundance below decks. It made for a stimulating career and one which kept me nimble.

Having said all this, the only trained killer who gets to practice their art on a daily basis is....Chef :)

Thank you very much, do you think I could be a part of a helicopter crew if I wore glasses?
Difficult to say definitively until your eyes have been tested and graded by an optician and verified by the AFCO Medical Examiner.

I've seen AETs who wear glasses conducting check test flights in helicopters but cannot recall seeing permanent aircrew wearing glasses - that isn't to say they don't exist, just that I've not noticed.

It's impossible to give you advice with regard medical suitability, particularly with regard aviation medical standards. Suffice to say the standards are rigorously applied as there are more applicants than jobs available in many cases.

A couple of things occur to me. I realise you have a brother who served but how do you know you like combat? Its not the sort of thing you can predict. As for being stuck doing something you don't like, that's going to be a large chunk of your time whether you are a weapon operator cleaning part of ship, or RM cleaning your kit, block, self etc. or ACMN cleaning your RayBans.

And without the DC party led by a steely eyed stoker armed only with a bucket of wedges and a mallet, we wouldn't float for long never mind move.
