  1. A motion is to be voted on by the University of Manchester Students' Union next wednesday (complete text available here), demanding (among other things) a ban on military presence within the university (including OTC, UAS and URNU). I suppose they think that our national defence is going to be seriously hampered by the loss of that mighty vessel, HMS BITER...

  2. Hopefully, there will be no more MoD or Old Bill sponsored courses for whatever in Manchester: so when a terrorist decides to come out to play in their cosy little corner of Utopia, they realise that their idiocy won't save them, but a few SAS/Booties or Old Bill could - but hey - they're not allowed on campus, are they ? OH DEARIE ME !!

When I was an ACLO in Manchester this one came up each year. Simple really I just used the University Property and not the SU. Well I used to make sure when I went to the SU for an interview, students can book a room to host an employer, I wore my uniform. Oh what fun.

As much as I would like to gee up the Moral Outrage Bandwagon this will be a non story like the UCL.

Still it will be fun for a while as we can laugh at the students.

  4. I worked at a Uni for 20 years and plod had to REQUEST to come onto campus.

Students' Unions tend to follow the lead of the National Union of Students, an historically left-wing organisation. I wouldn't be surprised if more Unions joined UCL and Manchester. It's ignorance of what we actually do, I suppose, but there's no point attempting to have a rational argument with such people - just treat them with the disdain they deserve.

I love it when free-loading opinionated tossers like this bang on about the Armed Forces being a bad thing. You'd have thought that with all that education they'd have learned that the only reason they are able to have such opinions is due to the sacrifices made by those who joined up to fight for this country and it's right to self determination over the years.

Protest by all means but don't alienate those who make it possible for them to live freely.

Time for Salford Uni TA & Co to do a little Black Ops and sort these twats out. :rambo: :rambo: :rambo:

We recently had the same type of problem in Berkley California. The city counsel wanted the Marines to close their recruiting office. Liberal tosspots! Feck them all.

  12. Re: armed forces being stopped from recruiting in manchester

I used to be in the URNU there... could never believe the idiots that got into the Student Union executive.

I can't get too upset about it really.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if they are misinformed & believe they should protest against the Armed Forces for the UK overseas policy, rather than take the case to those who govern.

The fact someone is at university doesn't mean they are automatically clever. Having spent a few years at one of the Oxbridge URNUs taught me that.

Whenever we attend undergraduate careers conventions & place a sign stating "Graduates: £28, 216 starting pay" or "Medical Students: £37, 500 pre-registration starting pay" or advertise sponsorship, it is clear money, not moral belief, is the motivator - despite what they may state on surveys.

Can't get too upset either. I'm a full-time matelot, part-time post-graduate OU student (and an NUS member too)!

How fortunate we are to live in a country where we have this bloody freedom of speech thingy, you can say or post pretty much what you like without fear of being dragged from your bed in the middle of the night. If anyone has a problem with that they might be more at home in North Korea.

  17. Re: armed forces being stopped from recruiting in manchester uni

    finknottle,

I (and I doubt anyone here) am not protesting the concept of freedom of speech, but the ignorance of those who are protesting.

It is somewhat ironic that you are making this protest - one of the reasons we are in Iraq is the fact that freedom of speech there was suppressed!

If these students could see past their copy of Socialist Worker to a slightly more balanced view of foreign affairs they may treat the Armed Forces with a little more respect.

  18. Re: armed forces being stopped from recruiting in manchester uni

And yes, you've got me on a bite.

  19. Re: armed forces being stopped from recruiting in manchester

I've always thought of the "agenda" people really have. Having a knock at the Armed Forces has recently been a popular (within a certain community) vote winning idea. So, every now and again, the new NUS leaders need stamp their authority on the new batch of naive, pliable students. So they require something to rally these troops to their "banner" - so out they troll the old classics: ban the bomb, slag off the armed forces, kiss the whale campaign etc.

And before you know it, these people suddenly pop up in your local election for your MP for Govnmt\Europe.

Very little in this world is new. News is just rehashed stories with differing participants. God how I hate the August news here when the TV news camera goes to the local girls schools to witness the latest 18\19 years old girls scream with delight that they have got 16 A levels at grade AA** (or whatever this dumbed down education sytem has nowadays). It must be in the producers' calendars. Easy TV reporting.

Well I thought I had heard all the justifications but that's a new one.
