2 Killed in Nuclear Submarine Fire in Northern Russia

A fire broke out aboard a Russian nuclear submarine, killing two crew members but causing no radiation threat, Russian news agencies reported Thursday.

The fire occurred on the Daniil Moskovsky submarine of the Northern Fleet, which plies Russia’s northern and Arctic waters, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported. It erupted Wednesday night in a mechanics room and was put out by around midnight, Interfax reported, citing the Russian Navy’s Northern Fleet.

“There is no threat of nuclear contamination,†Interfax quoted an unnamed Fleet spokesman as saying.

The ship’s nuclear reactor was shut down and the vessel was being towed along the surface of the water to its base at Vedyayevo, the agencies reported.

May their souls rest in peace.

  2. Wouldn't be a Sun-Dodger for all the tea in China. My hat goes off to those who do it.

Sympathy to the families of these poor guys.

  3. OK there are the risks, but think of the benefits: no skin cancers, no sunburn, no visits by dodgy royals, no wimmen onboard, no need to dhobey, same socks on for an entire month, showers: who needs 'em, therefore no need to take soap on a rope...

Seriously though, at least this time there have only been two deaths, tragic though that is for the men themselves and their families. Hopefully the Russians will not repeat the mistakes of the Kursk. Let us hope their families receive proper compensation from the authorities and are not left impoverished.
  4. How do you compensate for such a loss.?

Money does not keep you warm at night, give you someone to talk to or share a sad or happy moment.

A medal is just cold steel.
  5. Hi Gwen,

No that is true, but it does mean that the families are not impoverished which is some small comfort at least. It would still be better having their husbands though.
