Too old?

Hi all.

So I'm currently in the process of joining the Royal Navy as an AET but the last few weeks I've started to think maybe I missed the boat. I'll be 29 when/if I join. I know it's not too old by Navy requirements, I'm just thinking it's too old in a socially acceptable way.

Any opinions?

You'll find many more socially unacceptable behaviours once you're in. Age will be the very least of them :D

If its any consolation, I joined at the ripe old age of 26 - the oldest man in the intake and with a surname at the beginning of the alphabet - I got stitched for anything and everything and became a bit of a father figure at the time.....
26 years later, I am still here, still getting stitched and still regarded as a bit of a father time - but I would not change a thing. Best decision of my life to join when I did and I have never regretted it.

Go for it, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain - the kids need to be shown how a run ashore really can get out of hand! :)

I am 31 (32 in March) and I am on PRNC 20th March, start Raleigh 26th March!

Entering as an AET myself.

As the rest have said, the only issue is if you make it one.

Personally I am looking forward to the challenge and challenging myself. Yes there will be times I guess when the younger lads will want to mess about etc, that's when I guess the staff will look at you to guide them.

Go for it is what I would say!! I never forget talking to a young lad after our entry tests and he was fretting about the Maths test. He was worried as he hadn't revised for Maths or used Maths since he left school (a year before we took our tests) and was pleasantly shocked when I told him the last time I was in a classroom learning Maths was 2001!!

Yes you may have to work abit harder at certain stuff, but your left experience to date will balance that out.

Good luck!

I am in the process of re-joining at the moment, I did 7 years and left as a PO, I will be joining at the same rank so thats a bonus and just passed my PJFT this morning, I am 32, I can tell you that you are not too old, as a few people have said it would only be a problem if you let it become one.

In our intake there was a 3o year old and he loved it, still in now as a CPO.

As @shinson says, look forward to challenging yourself, the Navy will offer you more opportunities than any civvy job to do this.

Good luck mate :)

I joined when I was 32, I left during phase 2 due to other circumstances. I am now in the process of going back in at the age of 36 and within 6 months of me turning 37. Forget about your age mate, life is too short to worry about the number.

Kin hell I was only 3 years of retirement at that age time done?

Exactly as above!

I go on my PRNC in a week. I was abit apprehensive being 32, but then what I may lack in physical ability against the school lever, I hopefully have more experience and understanding.

Just go for it....end of the day, we all live once!!

It was my wife really who told me to go for it, in her own words " I would hate for you to reach 80 and whinge on about how you never tried to re enter service...." Those words were the start of a 2 year training plan to shift from 250lbs to 170lbs.

Hats off to you Shinson. That's dedication right there.

I have my face to face medical on Tuesday. Fingers crossed.

How bad do you want it?

That's what you have to ask yourself.

Work for it, and never stop thinking about the end goal. At times it sucks, it will be hard, I still hate running when its wind or lashing down with rain....but then I think if I don't it's an opportunity missed!

You'll be fine as long as you don't have any of the standard conditions mentioned to you before now.

Weight and height will be checked, as will hearing and sight.

Strip to underwear, perform a few basic body movements (5 press ups, walk on tip toes etc etc) and that's it really.

Wheels already in motion mate, Face to face medical this month, then eventually back to phase 2 asap.
good luck, you may join with a class of mature entrants, even though still very active into my early 50 I wouldn't fancy keeping up with a bunch of teenager that are full of beans
