Toilets on submarines

Hi all,

My apologies if this has already been addressed in another thread. Am joining navy as CIS Submariner been to RNAC and was really good but the one question I forgot to ask was about toilets on submarines.

At RNAC I noticed that it was a pretty busy few days and schedules and stuff go out the window and you adapt and I'm cool with that. And when you get to Raleigh it's a similar situation but there are times when you can nip to the loo if you need to for number two at least in off duty time.

I appreciate that joining as a Submariner has its hardships but the opportunities it brings are amazing. I appreciate that there are a lot of people and only a few toilets so was just curious if it's possible to stay regular. Is it possible say to get up in the morning and(sorry to be crude) go for a number two and maybe once again in the afternoon?

I just have this fear of being constipated at sea for three months at a time lol. Is it possible to go for a dump at a convenient time which generally takes at least a few minutes with wiping, etc, and not have someone banging on the door?

Do sailors on submarines develop some kind of a schedule so it is possible to go number two in a way that makes life on board comfortable and also is not infringing others comfort? Is it possible on those days where it's been a heck of a day and we need a little time to ourselves to take that copy of Newsweek into every mans second office for an extra five minutes of downtime?

Sorry for such a long thread and look forward to hearing all your answers.

Cheers

If you do get it wrong, you'll know where the saying "You're in the sh1t" comes from. It's also inadvisable to flush during silent running, even a fart can be picked up by an A/S ship a hundred miles away, I kid you not. o_O

Hence the term Silent But Deadly.

If the shit tank is full and you can't pump out, you can always have a dump in the Garbo.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the Navy humour and you guys are hilarious most of the time but it was a serious question too and would be great if someone could expand more on bathroom etiquette on boats.

Are you able to take a dump for like 5 minutes once or twice a day? Can you spend a little longer in there once in a while if it's not busy? Is there a pecking order so for instance all hell breaks loose if someone new spends more than three minutes in the toilet?

Raleigh date is approaching and would really appreciate some answers and you guys are always so helpful in answering our questions.

Cheers

If you need to shit, you go and shit. No set times, no pecking order, no drama. It's a friggin' submarine, not HMP!

Oh cool I thought as much just wanted to clear that up. Got to grips with things a bit at RNAC will get used to it all more at Raleigh and nice to know that on boats things will be pretty normal as far as all that goes. I guess it has to be with guys living together and working as a team just hope it really is like a home away from home am sure it will be.

Thanks guys for all your replies.

Cheers

Mind you, if you have just had the Friday night curry and have been on the panel in black lighting for a couple of hours 'cos the others have equipment snags........

Whilst there's no such thing as a daft question in the world of recruitment, there are times when we experience the odd 'near miss'. ;)

Not me, but on one boat I was on, the day before the dockies were due to spray paint the lower level bilges, someone had a dump in the bilge and the dockies just painted over it (and no, it wasn't me).

It was still there 2 years later as no-one had the nerve to break the paint seal :)
