TMU for past bout of depression, what are my chances?

Hi all

I'm currently going through the process of applying to be a Warfare Officer (submarines). It's been pretty slow due to the current coronavirus situation, but I had my Triage call today and was made TMU. I was kind of expecting this since I had a diagnosis of depression back in 2015 and was put on Citalopram for it for a period of I think maybe two months (it's hard to remember). Other than that I've been fit as a fiddle and have had non of the conditions listed in the medical questionnaire.

The depression was the result of some pretty horrific bullying in Sixth Form coupled with just general adolescent problems and I'm happy to say I've not suffered from it since and have been free of any treatment since August of 2015, so five years.

But I'm still pretty worried about it being a big black mark on my application, mainly the fact I was prescribed medication. It doesn't help that I've never actually met my current GP other than briefly when I first registered with them. My old GP knew the situation but he's since retired. So I have no idea what my current GP will make of it.

The lady from Capita said they'd be sending a form for the GP and I should ring the GP in two weeks to ensure they have done the form. But she also sent me an email copy of the form so I'm debating just calling them tomorrow and forwarding the email to them to fill out sooner. If I'm gonna get PMU'd I'd rather get it over with lol

All in all its very frustrating because in every other aspect of my application I'm feeling very confident: my AIB prep and navy knowledge is good, I've smashed my PJFT times and I even lost six stone over the past year in order to get in shape to join, and as I said other than this episode I've had no other medical conditions and I'm incredibly healthy, and this is the only thing I can really see being a impossible thing to overcome. I was 17/18 at the time and I've grown up so much in the past 5 years I know that if I was in the same circumstances again I would handle it much better and depression had not been an issue in my life since.

So any advice anyone has would be welcome, especially from successful applicants who were in a similar situation as I am

I was TMU for a whole year when I first applied, it’s generally 2-3 years clear of any meds dealing with depression. I had low mood and had taken sertraline for two weeks, they had classed it as depression even though the doctor said it wasn’t). I got into Raleigh a few months after the year had passed, don’t give up.

Thanks :)

Tried to get through to my GP yesterday to see if they'd recieved the form to fill out but wasn't available, so probably gonna try again on Monday.

I spoke to the nurse on the phone at my GPs office when I first got TMU and seeing my notes she said once they get the form they think I should be okay since other people have been in similar situations and passed but obviously it's up to Capita/the Navy to decide. I've been free of any meds or treatment for 5 years and had no other problems medically but idk if the doctor has sent the form off yet which is annoying so like I said best to chase it up.

Other than that I guess it's just a waiting game for now which is frustrating but is what it is, I suppose it gives me more time to get my PJFT down haha

Make sure you keep at it, I just scraped by on the PJFT and PRNC because I was lazy but once you get to Raleigh it gets intense, the second 2.4KM run at Raleigh was a piece of piss because of all the training you do there. Ended up getting under 10minutes which isn’t bad for my age haha.

The waiting to hear back is the worst part, especially during these unprecedented times.

good luck

Under 10mins, you are not supposed to use a car.

How slow are GP responses? My son handed Capita's request for further information to the surgery in early August. They told him yesterday, when he checked on progress, it could take until October. This is about surgery he had when very young. They just want the dates and the outcome. Thankfully no medical opinion involved otherwise I dread to think how long it would go on.

I was made TMU just over two weeks ago and as I say wasn't able to speak to my GP when I rang the other day so I'm not sure whether to form has been sent or not. I'll update on Monday if I can get ahold of them and see if that can provide a frame of reference. I think every GP and application will be different so there's no real way of knowing, and with the pandemic and everything going on it's probably slower than normal.

I have been told by friends that are in the forces and have been through this already the medical process can be the longest part of the application so unfortunately it really is just a lot of waiting and can last a few months. It's frustrating but it's just how it is and it'll be worth it in the end.

Good luck to your son!

I rang the GP each week and spoke with the person dealing with it. The longest period was waiting for payment from Capita before they completed the paperwork. Payment terms are 30 days.

Does anyone have a phone number for capita. I’m in a similar situation with waiting on capita. My gp have sent information back to capita over a week ago but have not heard anything since. I would just like a we have received what we need and will process in due course but nothing which is frustrating because I don’t know whether they have received it n for all I know I could be waiting on a response that is never coming. They don’t reply to my emails so I could do with a phone number ideally ??? Thanks

I rang my AFCO after a week or so and she basically said she received it but hasn’t rang me yet. She shuffled through some paper then said I’m back on waiting list for face to face medical.

Check your portal it may have changed from ‘On hold’ back to ‘suitability tests’
