Times: "Thousands Of Troops In Line For Pay Boost - Review Body Recommends 3% Increase"

I don't believe I made any assumptions. I commented on actual experience of people who joined not wanting to be Officers or having been steered down the Rating route only to Commission 2-3 years later. I had the same as a member of BRNC staff with two entrants being bussed from Raleigh.
Probably because they initially failed an element of officer selection. They will have been given options at all stages prior to entry but usually "forget" that element.

Many fail AIB, don't want to wait a year, opt to join as a rating and then bleat about their AFCO "making me join as a rating". I'm surprised BRNC hasn't cottoned on to it. Then again, perhaps I'm not.

There's a surprise - a 2% payrise against the 2.9% recommended and not being paid until September 2018, backdated to 1st April.

Food charges will increase by 4%

The good news?

Intriguingly, there is a lump sum bonus payment for all service personnel, equivalent to a 0.9% payrise, backdated. But your pension will only register the 2% payrise, not the 2.9%

Presumably this means 0.9% of one's monthly pay from 1st April 2018 will be paid as a taxable lump sum around December, thereafter monthly.

Before you injure yourself doing cartwheels or book a holiday in the Bahamas - I reckon that means I'll get an extra, one-off bonus of about two-hundred quid in December as a WO1.

Sweet jesus, after all this time we've broken the cap and you're dripping still? The salary increase will be more than enough to manage the food increase. Breaking the cap is a huge deal, as is funding DERR and the other announcements.

I don't understand that to be the case.

And therein lies the problem of perception. For NCHQ and the other PPOs, breaking the cap is a huge policy victory and something worth making a big deal about.

For the rest of us, it’s yet another below inflation pay “increase” which demonstrates that Defence isn’t really interested in its people...

It's not about the HQ or any of that bull - it's not a policy, its a practical issue.

Defence wanted more, Education wanted more, health wanted more, HMT controls the purse. Go figure.

Broken the cap? We need to do more than that to make good several years without a pay rise to even keep pace with inflation.

Two percen't is still below inflation by my reckoning and everybody else's.

Blimey.
It's like looking in a mirror.

Are you sure you're not me? ;)
one of them fair ground ones, that try to take the ugly out?
I was the same as Taztiff although I never joined up as a tiff, I did end up as one. I took the extra 10 years and managed to avoid Charge Chief :)

Being an officer didn't appeal to me one little bit, ERC cards, maintenance cards and writing 2022s was enough paperwork for me.
Ditto

Last time anyone actually suggested an inflation-matching payrise? Sacked: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uk...row-paid-the-price-for-supporting-troops.html

Time to put people before OJARs & SJARs.
At my place of work, they have been looking at many ways to keep pay rises down. They used to be one of the best payer in Guzz but not now, they are one of the better. The funny thing is the order books are very full, they need to recruit 30% this year, they used to have an attrition rate of 1%-2% now it's more like 20% bods finding better pay elsewhere, biggest losses they have had is engineers.
Piss enough people off long enough and they will walk, regardless what's on offer.

As they would and should. I'd like a new car, can't afford one - life's a bitch. You need to focus your ire on the Gov and HMT not MoD or VSO who've been banging the drum about pay and conditions for years and continue to do so. It doesn't help that almost a 1/3rd of our budget goes on manpower costs - it's a huge factor. Equally doesn't help that Education, Health, Police, Fire Brigades etc all want pay rises. There is not an infinite pot.

Like I said to ATG, it's a start but the pot isn't infinite and there are a huge amount of demands to balance. Of course I'd like more, but people have to be realistic. Which is one reasons MPs taking 11% payrise takes the pi$$, but thats another topic. We need to be able to take a look in perspective.

Half right.

It was staged. A 2% pay increase from April for pension purposes, not paid until September. The additional 0.9% will not be added to pensions, not paid until December, earliest. :)

I don't think it is staged, as I understand it the 0.9% is a one-off, we've a 2% pay-rise? What I'm really unclear on is what is the 0.9% off, Apr-Dec or an annual equivalent. The messaging wasn't very clear. Even if you look at DERR it announced it for Officers but I know it's only up to SO2 (no issue with that), that wasn't made clear. I keep telling people if your Mother wouldn't understand it you need to make it simpler.

Yep, the 0.9% bit is clear as mud unfortunately.

It's suitably ambiguous enough to mean anything from 0.9% of April-Sept, April-Dec or April -March.

At risk of sounding a bit like Eeyore, I expect it'll be "whatever is the smaller". :)
