  1. I'm just wondering how long it is between applying and taking the fitness test. I am not currently at the standard, but my family say I should apply now and by the time I take the test I should be ready. Would this be better that getting my run time down, then applying?

You should start your phys routine now & apply simultaneously.

From submitting an application to sitting the recruiting test, it should be under two weeks. Test to interview, within a couple of weeks. After passing the interview, you must complete the medical questionnaire & get your eyes tested. Medical appointments vary between regions, but it should be within a month...after which you have a couple of weeks to book & take the pre joining fitness test.

As long as you are not unfit/overweight and there are no delays at the medical, you should be fit enough to take & pass the pjft inside a couple of months. If not, you are not training at a high enough intensity.
  3. Sounds like plenty of time, thanks for the help
