Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. I'm trying to locate a copy of the above book which I read in the 60's whilst serving in Singapore. It was the most realistic account of life in the Navy in the 60's which I have ever read. Ironically most of the story occurs in The Far East.
Does anyone know of a copy anywhere?
    Yours aye
  2. When you say "track it", where?

There's a long waiting list mate, do a google search and you may pick up a copy mind you they are in excess of £100 it makes you wonder if it would be worth speaking to the publisher to see if they would think of doing a re print
  4. Blimey- makes me wish I had kept my copy!!!
  5. Thanks for that I will check that out. QRU AR
  6. They have it in the BL. The BL state that one can read the book in their reading rooms but they have no authority to copy or sell books that are still in copy-write!
Oh well back to the drawing board!

I have just sent an email off to Harper Collins who appear to be the latest company to have taken over the original publishers, asking them if the have any plans to re-print the book. I don't hold out much hope but if you don't ask you don't get.

I'll post any reply on here
  8. Cheers mate, i look forward to their response.
  9. I have just looked on amazon and this book is going for One thousand pound!!!

It must be an epic book or where they limited editions?? I can't get my head around it.
  10. Not limited editions, just very rare. Had one copy in our mess on Fife, took about a month for all 60 blokes to read it t'were that good.
  11. Sounds cool!
  12. I had and read this book in 66. It inspired me to keep a journal with names and dits. I later started to write my own book but made the mistake of leaving some of the manuscripts at my parents' home. Mother found them and burned them, together with some volumes of my journal, because of the "filth" they contained. I went ballistic and my parents and I were estranged for a couple of years because of it. I lost heart after that but I still have a few thin handwritten volumes somewhere in a locked suitcase in my mother's loft.
I may still have my copy of The Red Sailor in that suitcase. I hope so, I'd love to read it again.

I looked a while back on fleabay and if I remember correctly it was starting off at £500 odd. Luckily I got a read and passed it on. I wasn't very happy about the ending mind you.

I might spoil it for you.
