Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. I have no clue as to how many of what we have in our fleet now, as I do not know if they still print "Janes Fighting Ships".
This was the navy of 1967, I joined in 65 but they were just about to launch some listed here so I put 67 to cover them.

    5 Aircraft Carriers
    2 Commando Carriers.
    2 Nuclear powered Polaris Submarines.
    3 Nuclear Powered fleet Submarines.
    43 Diesel Submarines.
    2 Assault Ships.
    3 Cruisers.
    8 Guided Missile Destroyers.
    16 Destroyers.
    71 Frigates.
    1 Minesweeper Support Ship.
    2 Helicopter Support Ships.
    1 Ice Patrol Ship.
    1 Heavy Repair Ship.
    3 Submarine Repair Ships.
    1 Destroyer Depot Ship.
    6 Maintenence Ships.
    6 Survey Ships.
    7 Survey Craft.
    75 Costal Minesweepers.
    25 Inshore Minesweepers.
    7 Costal Minelayers.
    5 Tank Landing Ships.
    30 Tank Landing Craft.
    60 Minor Landing Craft.
    10 Experimental Ships
    7 Fast Patrol Boats.
    7 Seaward Defence Boats.
    19 Fleet Supply Ships.
    35 Fleet Tankers.
    28 Boom Defence Ships.
    7 Ocean Salvage Ships.
    6 Costal Salvage Ships.
    2 Cable Layers.
    12 Fleet Tenders.
    15 Armament Carriers.
    20 Water Carriers.
    80 Fleet Berthing Tugs.
    130 Service Craft.

I make that 276 actual Warships including Minesweepers.
500 other naval and RFA crewed vessels.

So when I refere to the old Navy, cut us some slack and imagine what it was like when Granny joined up in 18........  :D

Size is no guarantee of strength...
  3. Janes Fighting Ships is still published, but I certainly can't afford it. However for those wanting an update on the 'Navy Of 2009' (perhaps some of those from the BRNC Sep 2009 thread?) you could do worse than looking at this year's Broadsheet:

There is also a 'pull out' listing all of the ships in the navy too - it comes up a bit small on my screen though so I am afraid you will have to count them yourself:

    Ships Pull Out

  4. Thats very true, but to cover that aspect we had Three Field Gun Teams.
  5. No but it makes you sh*t when a big B*stard comes at you :)
  6. And even three field gun's. :D

Did we have to put money in the electric meter, or was there enough friction between branches to spark things up
  7. Is jane's expensive now I think I paid £6.00 for mine in 67 so it was quite dear then. A week's pay but daddy bought it me, good old dad :D

By 1965 I had served on...2 Carriers, 3 Cruisers, 2 LCT's, 1 Destroyer and 7 shore bases. Almost as many ships as are left in the modern fleet.
Good God, I am an 'old b'stard! Time I went to bed.
