The Daily Whinge

It happens all the time - things that appear to have been done just to spoil your day or piss you off.

Why not get it out of your system, vent your spleen and tell us all about it so we can share/feel your pain.

For starters, a pet hate of mine. Airport Duty Free!

As an international jet setter and general man about town, I have to use airports. So this whinge is directed at the commercial planning idiot(s) who thought it would be a good ploy to make you stand in line at security, take your belt and shoes off, search your bag randomly for explosive residue and THEN funnel you into the long smelly maze that is laughingly referred to as 'Duty Free' before you can get to the sanctity and seating of the departure lounge.

Being sprayed with smellies from plastic looking females, while trying to force your way past all the dawdling first time flyers (so it seems) or those that genuinely think they are getting a bargain because a printed sign tells them so, in order that you may then get out of the smelly Hell and sit down with a vastly over-priced mediocre coffee.

If I wanted to buy perfume or booze I would either have done so earlier, and much cheaper then packed it in my hold bag OR found a seat in the departure area then meandered back in to 'enjoy' the shopping experience.

No longer the frequent traveller, I know what you mean from my past.
Brought some stuff back from Canada, wrapped OK for Canada customs, coming back via Holland, they don't like packaging so confiscate everyone's stuff, he gave me a dirty look when I said enjoy your free duty free stuff?

Since retiring my frequent flyer days have been shelved.
However my booze cabinit is still full of various types of liquer that I thought I might like.
Now as an almost non drinker I find myself trying to dispose of it through friends and family,
Anyone want some vodka flaoured with twigs from trees that reindeer eat? :)

I did look, I promise! Found a lacklustre one with half a dozen posts from 2008.

Abject apologies, I'll take myself off for a bit of self flagellation.

Well, it IS bed-time.

Slims memory certainly is not what it used to be.
Thinking about getting one of those new fast stairlifts.
The one which gets you to the top of the stairs before you forget what you went up for!

Going to Gib in Feb for a long weekend with the Wife and Kids and wanted to stock up on cheap pussers, as we only have hand luggage we cant buy it in Gib :(

If I wanted to check in a bag on the flight (sleazy jet), £40 each way!!!! I'd have to buy a lot to make that back.

Got the accom for £50 a night so there is a silver lining.

Surely you can buy it at Gib airport duty free

But we all know its always a bargain at the airport :( I'll have a look when I'm out there. I get it from Germany at the moment for the RNA (pre Brexit) for £19 a bottle delivered.
We all know that airports are a rip off but I reckon in Gib you will be able to buy it cheaper than the UK
Of course once we leave the EU you will be able to buy it cheaper anywhere in europe :)

I'll have a look, however I might do a big order from the German Supplier to stock up.

No problem but it is just the bumf saying that the duty free is AFTER the departure gate.
Normally means you can get a sealed bag and take it on your aircraft.
No problem unless you are changing flights elsewhere

If you get it in a sealed DF bag its no problem at security in the UK if you are getting a connecting flight.

I like the original rant. What you failed to mention is that you also get coralled in a holding area where all the shops are and only get told the gate when they are ready to board. They try anything to part you from your money.

On the same theme, another airport issue that p***es me off is when you get a connecting flight. You have cleared security at the initial airport and then have to go land side at the second airport, clear security again before you go on to your next flight. Why??? So you buy some water in 1st airport departure lounge and have to bin whats left before going through security in the 2nd one! (Substitute water with any liquid of your choosing).

With some of the countries I have travelled from I welcome the extra inspection at connecting airports. :)
