Urban dictionary has gt it pretty much spot on. No doubt that easily outraged corner of Wail readers here on RR will be outrageously outraged by this outrage.

Why is it anyone with right wing sympathies immediately acquires a stereotypical brown shirt and jack boots? Interestingly, people with left wing views don't seem to be associated with green smocks and pitch forks. Is that because we had a particularly unpleasant experience of a variety of the former that, perhaps, indefinitely postponed an unpleasant experience of the latter?

For what it's worth, I despise the tabloids for their rabble rousing. The Guadian, on the other hand, does it far more subtly.

In practice there is little to distinguish the fascist from the communist, they just get to the same answer from slightly different directions. They both end up with broadly socialist economies and excessively authoritarian control mechanisms. Communist ideology needs the authoritarian control to operate the economy, authoritarian control stifles entrepreneurship and results in the need for a highly centralised and planned economy.

If anything I'd characterise the Daily Mail as Authoritarian, rather than right wing. From an economic perspective right wing means free enterprise, captialist finance structures and freedom for market dynamics to operate.

Right wing/ left wing is too simplistic to be meaningful.

Never a truer word spoken, it's a very broad spectrum. I disagree with Pol's comments that those who lean to the left aren't stereotyped, the amount of times I've been called a hippy lefty pinko is many. Whereas I do have some left wing, liberal views but at the same time I'm quite conservative and authoritarian. The simple left / right argument doesn't work, it's infinitely more complicated than taht.

My favorite Urban Dictionary "Daily Heil" Headlines:

MUSLIMS ARE GOING TO KILL US ALL BY UNLEASHING BIRD FLU INTO THE AIR!!1 AND THEN THEY WILL STEAL OUR JOBS!!1"

"The Queen is awesome!"

"I am Richard Littledick and EVERYTHING IS BAD AND WRONG and I am a ridiculous, reactionary, pathetic buffon!!1"

"I'm Amanda Platell and I hate all women but ESPECIALLY NATASHA KAPLINSKY!!1"

"Everybody but us sucks"

"GET A JOB! I DON'T CARE IF YOU'RE HOOKED UP TO A VENTILATOR!"

"We r taxpayers, hurr hurr"

"Speeding cameras ARE SO CRAP!!1"

"Look; it's PC gone mad! A man was ARRESTED for beating up a Muslim! The horror!"

"WE WIN @ LIFE! LOOK, AN AWARD FOR MOST HOMOPHOBIC NEWSPAPER OF THE YEAR!!!!!1!!!!1!!"

"Shut up about being raped and make my tea"

"THE TRAUMA OF BEING STOPPED FOR SPEEDING!!!1!!

I don't think being right wing on it's own brings out the jackboot style comments, rather when such attitudes are allied with racism and zenophobia, which is reasonably appropriate, for those with left wing tendencies one mentions the red flag or when I was younger the hammer a sickle. though under stalin the hammer on it's own would have been more appropriate.

I think part of it these days is that the left has won the PR battle and socialism is seen to be nice whilst capitalism is nastuy. If one goes to the US the general perception is reversed and even democrats flinch at the suggestion they may be embracing socialism in any way. McArthy still has a significant influence.

What amuses me is the number of times I'm described as left wing, hippy etc. Libertarianism is a poorly understood concept.

Liberal is such a misused description, in popular usage, particularly the tabloids, it's used as shorthand for authoritarian and interventionist.
