Bad weather is threatening to wash out play on day three of the weather-affected third Ashes Test at Edgbaston.

Lunch will be taken early with another pitch inspection to be held at 10.30pm AEST.

The problem is not only the intermittent showers but the soaked outfield with rain having fallen on 15 of the last 18 days in Birmingham.

Further showers are forecast in the area for the rest of the day.
