Taliban to be paid off

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

    So we have admitted that the only way to win support in Afghanistan is with money... we will pay off the very people who have sent so many British troops to their graves. The same way we paid off the insurgents in Basra so we could have a quiet withdrawal. :evil:

    We cannot "win" because nobody knows what "winning" in this situation means. We have not got anywhere near enough troops to hold the areas in a secure enough state to get real regeneration and development work going, we are losing men over dusty disused compounds only for them to be retaken quietly weeks later in many cases.

    This argument that we must be physically in Afghanistan to prevent terrorist attacks in Britain is garbage. If that is the case we should be in Pakistan, in Saudi Arabia, in Algeria, in Yemen, in Somalia, Nigeria ... the list goes on! We have to have an intelligence led approach to countering terrorism using targetted attacks wherever they may be needed not by getting bogged down in long counterinsurgency campaigns.

    Someone needs to have the guts to say, this isn't working, we're off. Continuing on this road to nowhere will do nothing but waste more lives, money and credibility. :evil:

  2. We are already paying off Pakistan to sort their side of the border out, whats the differance? :?

  3. And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
    But we've proved it again and again,
    That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
    You never get rid of the Dane.

    It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation,
    For fear they should succumb and go astray;
    So when you are requested to pay up or be molested,
    You will find it better policy to say:--

    "We never pay any-one Dane-geld,
    Nor matter how trifling the cost;
    For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
    And the nation that plays it is lost!"

  4. The taxes of the soldiers who have been and are fighting these bastards will be used to fund this folly.

  5. I have been advocating this approach for a long time. The technology and ability to shut down training camps as/when required is there. All this talk about bribing the Taliban to stop their support of Al-Qaeda, to which Ben Bradshaw has just eluded to on QT, is bollocks. Sure, the Taliban turned a blind eye to AQ in the 90's, but I firmly believe that the current insurgency has less to do Taliban with supporting AQ and is actually all about fighting what is seen as an occupying force.
