    Chinese whispers on Facebook, eh?

By the time this news traveled North of Pompey this morning, it was a letter bomb and a rating was in a critical condition with serious burns - all this within 30 minutes and spreading like wild-fire 250 miles away.

Why wasn't it in the national news? "Security" apparently.

Facebook is dangerous, make no mistake.

  6. Typical facebook speculation, the hampshire constabulary is always terrible for that! There was a similar incident at the uni once with people claiming all kinds of stuff- turns out it was just a letter had been sent to the wrong person and as it was the scientific research faculty they were extra careful as could have been something sent with an intent to hurt. I suppose it is good to inform local people so it doesnt set off mass panic when they see the streets lined with emergency vehicles and stuff but the rumours arent helpful and i imagine upsetting and scary to people who know people who could have been affected. By the sounds of it just the female rating came off a bit worse for wear but hopefully her burns arent too bad and her skin recovers quickly.

This is a prime example of the crap that comes out on social media.

The good news is that Facebook users most often use their real name and one sincerely hopes that the total lack of integrity of those anxious to be the first to sensationalise a comparatively minor incident in their quest for fame or infamy will be taken to task by those who look after Naval Security in the digital domain.
  8. Oh my poor wording, i meant the page and its comments by the public, not the statuses and information posted by the constabulary themselves.

Just read Hampshire Plod's faceache page. No big deal, minor injury, no threat to public safety.

The old saying ( Churchill?) about lies being half way around the world before truth has its boots on is more apt than ever, what with social media.

The ARRSE threads of big news stories ( Boston Marathon bombing and Woolwich murders/terror attacks ) open the box of keyboard socialisers, beer and popcorn and TV to hand, watching and reporting everything that the non stop news programmes are guessing about to others who are doing the same thing. That and such detailed analysis that means Boston Police, Massachusetts State Police, the FBI, MI5 and the Met can all go home. Case solved.....not. WTF?

What wasn't reported about the Nelson incident was that 3 divers were reprimanded by their OIC for responding to the incident without having first had a facial and a manicure.

Possibly the thing that people miss when so eager to spread such rumours in public domain is that every single parent, partner or affiliate of anyone serving in the Navy in Portsmouth today will have been worrying, in the main part, about nothing.

For that alone, their collective arses need a good kicking.

They need to be deprived from their computers and internet capable mobile phones. Live in the recent past for once. It wasn't hard.

Pot kettle. I'm supposed to be doing something far more important than posting my 'wisdom' and world view on the interweb. I'm off to give myself a bollocking.

Oops, that sounds like variation on 'in my day'.

    Another bollocking.
  16. No one taking the bait today it seems!
  17. A female rating received burns to her arms when something with a battery exploded.

Hmmm, is it just me or shall I go to the naughty step on my own for reading more into that?

  18. Well he must have done the all-arms Matelot course to get the coveted blue beret he's sporting!
  19. An exaggerated trollop?
