All piss-taking aside; that report is pretty damning. Serious errors on the parts of the control room team with a collision only avoided by the actions of the ferry.

who's side of the story, the wail's wanting to sell papers or the Navy doing close quarters training with a target of opportunity, but they will never state that?

I'm no fan of the Daily Fail, but trying to sell this as an over-reaction by ignorant journalists or pretending that the situation was under control the whole time and it was nothing more than close-quarters training is allowing your pride as a submariner to blind you to the truth of the matter. The boat's control room team completely misread the situation and put themselves in a position of danger - only a sharp-eyed lookout and the swift action of the bridge team on the ferry stopped this being a collision.

I'm as proud a submariner as anyone - but if we keep pretending we're Gods Gift and things like this are just daring-do or normal business, rather than the result of professional failings, then we're going to lose a boat.

If the boat screwed up they need to learn, I'd like to see the real report and not the wails view of if.

It's in every paper now, Independent, Express etc, and looking at the photo the boat was far too close. It's not as if they were doing an underwater look.

The presumption is that 'twas one of ours...

Try this one. 'Although it may well have NOT been one of ours the UK played along with the inquiry and agreed that it was ours rather than reveal an unpleasant scenario of any 'foreign boat' pottering along lazily at pd in our confined coastal waters (...again).'

Either way, it was a collision narrowly avoided but, lest we forget, wasn't so long ago that less-than-careful-SSK's were keeping the 3 peri-shops and chippies-shops busy with similar unplanned activities...

The report doesn't make comfortable reading.

I have only read the opening pages of the report but the first thing that stands out for me is the decision to stay at periscope depth during a period it was not necessary. There were fishing boats about and the ferry, I would have thought a little deeper would have been safer while scran was being served.

^ Worth reading the whole report (You & Sue, WINK )'

Inboard had their head screwed firmly on when, having learned of the incident, they directed the boat to RTB asap (presumably all the way back on the roof) for coffee sans biscuits (?) and further simulator training.
