Submariner questions

Thanks for this mate yeah I prefer electronics but I'd assume power engineering is needed more.
All generators and pump, main engine control etc is electronically controlled. Even the thermal and overload trips in electric motors are electronic these days.

Paper shuffling and thinking they are in charge. Telling the Captain it will be ready in 2 hours and then explaining how it will take longer. They occasionally get involved in problem solving and then retire to their cabin to write an article for the naval engineering journal. The people who do the hands on stuff are the technicians or whatever the flavour is this month. In my day it was artificers and mechanicians with help from the stokers who wanted/pestered to get stuck in.

The other thing to not do is stand over your maintainer's shoulder asking when it will be fixed...........

Might be 5 minutes, might be 66 hours (slept well after that one!!)
Same rule applies for Wafu engineer officers too!!!
Challenge your engineers at your own peril!!!!

Not enough pictures in it for me ;)
If you could get past all the clanky crap there were some good articles in there. Didn’t there used to be a “FOST Top Tips” bit at the back or was that another publication?

I’ll have you know that clanky crap was my career, paid my mortgage, post career employment and helped me fit my new kitchen. :)

I agree with above, officers don't fix anything as they aren't trained to. They manage (in theory) the engineering department and do most of the paper work, planning and admin behind the engineering. If you want to be hands on officer isn't the job for you. MESM rating you can go mechanical or electrical but the higher you get the more you are encouraged to cross qualify.

WESM don't have mechanical or electrical as far as I'm aware.

Time off . Most lads don't even get their annual leave entitlement at the moment so times are busy.

MESM can cover Mechanical (heavy stuff), Electrical and electronics.

WESM can cover mechanical (not the big stuff MESM do) Electrical and electronic.

At sea I had ME's asking me for help, and in turn I as a WE asked them for help.

both may have to look at software faults at times.

Hence a lot of basic theoretical training at Collingwood or Sultan will cover the same area's maybe even some of the same modules. the big difference will be specialisation at the end of training.

Plus MESM smell.

MESM stream mechanical or electrical I was saying. Don't think WE steam as such.

Most MESM I know would rather chop of their prized possessions than ask the WEs for help

wrong MEs produce steam not WE

WE's tend to stream into combat systems
