Submarine trades getting pushed forward??

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Just got a phone call from my AFCO, to book my PJFT, as he said he was told to push my trade ( WS S SM) forward, i dont know if it is for just this trade, or all submarine trades.

Has anyone else been told this?

    Many thanks

  2. I know that a year ago whilst on ops, we were struggling to get SSMs at AB level, and I don't think this shortfall has been made up. If the powers that be have only just realised that the only way to address the shortage of ABs is to recruit and train more, I would be disappointed, but not surprised.

  3. It's not just SM trades I think it is most. Happy to be corrected. I got told the same thing on monday morning.

Those who have passed the Recruiting Test several months back, waiting to move forward for CIS(SM), WS (SSM), ET (WESM), MA(SM), SA (SM) & ET(MESM) trades may well find themselves moved to the next stage (Medical) over the coming months.

  5. Amen to that. Now hurry up JPA :p

On a serious note, hopefully the poor buggers with the engineering age limit issues have found alternatives that suit them

  6. Damn you submariners!

I'm in a bit of a confusing situation atm. I originally applied for RM and changed to RN at a later date. This means that I have got my RT, Eye Test and Medical already. No-one seems to be sure if I'll now be processed based on my RT date, on based on my medical date or based on when I changed job.

Point of order, but can we stop saying trades? The RN has branches ffs...

  8. Exactly so, quoth he. There is only ONE 'Trade' in the Royal Navy and that is the Submarine Service.

Rarely used these days but, for the sake of our illustrious precessors, let none of us ever forget it......

You can if you wish, however when addressing civilians the term "branches" can be confusing as it can refer to the Fleet Air Arm, Submarine Service, General Service or sub-branches such as Engineering, Warfare, Logistics, Air or indeed individual job titles within sub branches such as CIS, ET(MESM), AET etc.

The service is full of abbreviations and phrases which are confusing enough & frankly cringe-worthy when you witness the glazed expression of a civilian enquirer wondering which jargon-laden language the individual is speaking in.

For clarity, the term trade is used to indicate a specific job within a branch.

  11. Stephen Fry could have not put it more eloquently :)

  12. Stephen Fry? Now you are talking about 'Rough Trade', surely?
