Submarine leave how does it work

Topstop

War Hero
The thing is, there's the leave you think you're going to get and the leave you finally take after the defects, programme changes and operational issues have taken their toll. Mate of mine was 5 minutes away from going home when they realised someone had done a runner, so he did a workup instead - with one set of 8's and a borrowed tooth brush, which as a stoker was something of an issue.
Halfway through killicks course got Loaned to a "S" Boat for a "week" while between parts of the coarse.
On the Fri 0830 Chief says "got your steaming kit onboard?"
"No I on leave as soon as you sail 2 weeks in the sun the back on Killicks course"
"Wrong, you've got half an hour to make your phone calls, get you steaming kit and get back onboard"
Ex girlfriend not best pleased Parents accept it, no sun for 3 months and a break in course of nearly a year.

You were lucky at least you had chance to short your shit out. Misses still moans about me going to work in the morning and getting the spare crew CoXN phone call to say he has sailed, wife how long for CoXN cannot say (did not know), or due in and she gets the call he will not be home when expected, wife when should I expect him, CoXN when he gets home.

Better galley, better gym facilities, for the most part decent accom, less skimmers so its more laid back. Im talking about the actual base not the location.
a wedge of the new accom has been closed down at the mo. Not fit for purpose

Plenty of times I have been up there, the lads were sleeping on old mattresses in random cabins. Hot bunking beds in the old wardroom JRs who are based up there would do well NOT to share an SLA cabin...they have put two beds in loads of them...and that has been in the last two years
The gym facilities are good. The base though, NAAFI shutting way earlier than any other base I know
Throw in the location, which is always a part of people having satisfaction of their time there....

I just cant see how in any view it is a better place to be based than drake

Is one block out of 18 a wedge? One is closed for rework to be done by the contractor on a rolling basis. They are short of accom but which RN base in the country isn't? The SLA has been stuffed up everywhere. They did put 2 JRs beds in each of the bigger SR cabins but for the most part it is only short stayers who are in the old wardroom and I've not heard of anyone hot bunking ever.

The NAAFI? Not sure when it shuts but think it's 9 or 10 which is similar to other bases. Don't know that there is a best base to be at. They all have their good points and their many bad points. Depends what you are after I suppose. The food is the best PAYD I've seen though and getting meals in the bar til late on is pretty good.

Well, I can tell you that many of the lads were hot bunking in Neptune for a period when we pulled in
rotating the beds between those who were duty and not.
Mattresses in random cabins...including Bootneck cabins. (or even no accom and having to stay onboard when alongside)

as for the NAAFI...shuts what (earlier this year)..1pm on a saturday until monday morning? (may open for an hour or so on a sunday)
Base buses that stop v early. Commcen does not offer the same amount of services as Devonport for example (no courier)
looking at least £10 in a taxi to get near civilisation (if you miss the bingo bus)

it has many good points, but if you offered me a 3 year draft. Clyde will be a distant 3rd of the 3 base ports (if I had a choice)

Just my opinion.

I used to love those who championed faslane. It meant that little bit of a lesser chance I would go there

So things have gone down hill, in the 80s on a visiting Boat the JRs were victualled in the Commodore and a single mate, Base staff in NTD, was on LA in Alexandria.

They are also building a load more cabins and the ones that are shut are being refurbed its a tempory issue rather than a long term one. I was based up there until fairly recently I know loads of JRs who are not sharing a cabin. Plus it does not involve driving past Birmingham which is a massive plus for anyone north of Birmingham.

The RN is going to have the entire submarine flotilla at Faslane sooner or later. We can honk about it all we like but Guzz will be the new DOLPHIN sooner or later. Future submariners are going to have to get their heads around Faslane and to learn to like it there.

Just imagine it, LOA in Scotland, the mind boggles.

But on the other hand, Military Establishments are crown property, the 'Local' Tax Office for the RN used to by Ty Glas Road in deepest Darkest Wales, so just maybe, the Forces will pay taxes at Rump UK rates, which will be good for Jack and Jenny if Taxes go up in Scotland, but a kick in the teeth if they go down!

They could go the USA way and have local taxes in store, which means everyone pays on their purchases

Do you pay it to matelots who live in Scotland but have drafts in England?

Well I don't know I'm not sure how much extra the Scottish nazi party are planning on charging up there. But if people are loosing an extra 5% of their wages it's not beyond belief that people would leave because of it. It's also not beyond belief that it's cheaper to just to compensate people rather than recruit and retrain (if it's even possible to do so )
