Spent Convictions

Made a mistake way back and ended up with community service, the record is spent for a while now but wondering if it will count against me...? It wasn't for anything booze, drugs or violence related

Hello mate,

Depends what the offence was I think, but if its spent and was a while back then I doubt it will count against you. When you applied for your recruit test your CA should of given you an information sheet explaining the Rehabilitation of offenders act, and the length of time required for convictions to become spent.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be along soon.

I think I have the sheet the AFCO gave me regarding the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. I'll write the relevant parts up here tomorrow if no-one's come along with an answer by then.

... the advice (as always) is to contact your AFCO as they will be able to advise you on the Rehabilitation of Offenders policy.

Spot on

Assuming the 5 years since date of conviction have elapsed since the Community Service Order was given, then the conviction is indeed spent & need not be declared on the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act declaration form. All convictions, spent or unspent (apart from parking tickets & speeding fines) must be declared on the Security Check Questionnaire.

Will it affect selection? If it's a conviction involving dishonesty you cannot join as a logistician dealing with stores or pay nor join in any medical specialisations, whether the conviction is spent or otherwise. Many people aren't too happy with dishonest people maintaining aircraft for some strange reason. (" Did you put the oil drain plug back?" - "Erm, yeah honest").

The rough rule of thumb is to be honest & demonstrate an element of remorse/regret for commiting an offence, if there is any.

haha love it. after a day of trying to find a barbers that aint shut RR cheers me up no end lol.

On plus side, did manage to get the hair cut so il be tidy for tomorrows trip to AFCO
