Sift interview this week for pilot position

  1. Hi guys I'm 24 and in the process of acquiring information for the application I have made for pilot. I have a few questions that Im finding difficulty in getting the answers to, so any help from this forum would be much appreciated.

    How long will basic navy training be?

    How long and extensive is officer training?

    Where will my training be?

    How much will I be paid during training?

    What are the opportunities for promotion in this career?

    Are there any computer games or online simulation that I can use to enhance the quality of my application?

    Im slightly concerned about my lack of experience in leadership or positions of authority, but I am reluctant to embellish anything because I feel that honesty is always the best policy especially in an interview of this magnitude.

  10. It's what pilots are awarded, you know instrument reating and the like. They are also awarded a rating when on board to make their bed, put their laundry in and serve them tea and biccies

  13. Thanks Scouse :? I will qualify my comments by stating that I joined BRNC in 1984, therefore, I am totally out-of-date with the new, fandangled way of doing things. This means not relying on one-stop-shop, easy fixes and, instead, doing some proper research with paper an' stuff. I went before the AIB as a 16 year old, applying for a Reserved Place and Scholarship. I read all things RN and armed services, in general. I took subscriptions to the Telegraph (because that was the AIB's favourite newspaper), Navy News and (shhhh) RAF News. I was very heavily involved in the Air Training Corps and managed to complete all of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. I'm glad to say that I managed to fool the AIB into thinking I might have the stuff they were looking for and joined the RN after completing my 'A' levels.

    Why am I boring all and sundry with my early CV? Simply to show that I put in the effort to get what I REALLY wanted. If anything, the Internet makes people lazy in researching and preparing properly. By all means use it as a tool but, in my opinion, it is only a tiny part of your overall prepardness and should be treated as such. In other words; pull your finger out and get researching properly, using official means.

    How long will basic navy training be? You will not do basic training. You will enter BRNC and commence your officer training and, thereafter, your pilot training

    How long and extensive is officer training? When I joined it was 2 terms for SL pilots/observers. This meant just over 8 months at Dartmouth. The first term was spent doing the basic things expected of all service personnel: running around, marching around, polishing everything, re-polishing everything and studying general service things, such as seamanship, knot tying, practicing lamp swinging and shouting 'ahaar' etc. The second term still involved running, marching etc but less of it. More time was spent on 'professional' studies i.e. the area into which you were going to specialise. So, pilots and Os spent time in the classroom studying principles of flight, meteorology etc. Also in term 2 we undertook grading. This involved trying to fly a Chipmunk with an old salt of the air sitting in the back, desperately trying not to take control and sort out the mess you'd just put him in. Basically, they are looking for your potential to be able to complete the next phase of your flying training. Extensive? Yes, pretty extensive. You learn a lot, don't sleep very much and, if you're weird like me, actually quite enjoy it. Intensive? Yes, even more so. There's lots to cram in and a short time to do it, so you have to keep on top of things and have to put the effort in. Slacking results in being thrown out and having to join the RAF :cry:

    Where will my training be? Dartmouth. Then for me: Seafield Park, RAF Topcliffe. RAF Linton-on Ouse. RAF Valley. RAF Chivenor. RAF Wittering. RNAS Yeovilton. Clue: Most of these are either no longer in existence of not used for RN pilot training any more. Refer to advice regarding research through official channels

    How much will I be paid during training? I think my figures would be a tad useless

    What are the opportunities for promotion in this career? There are admirals with wings on their sleeves

    Are there any computer games or online simulation that I can use to enhance the quality of my application? They might well help for the tests you will undertake to assess your aircrew suitability but won't help in your initial application/interview. I did my tests after the AIB but they may well have changed that nowadays. Basically, you'll sit in front of a computer and carry out a series of tests to assess your hand, eye co-ordination etc. There are plenty of games around that might enhance your abilities but I'm not qualified to comment. We were told to play lots of squash, as Space Invaders really did not cut it as far as pilot skills were concerned

Yes, you must be honest but, if you're going to be an officer in the RN then you'd better sort out your leadership and authority 'issues'. Nobody expects you to be the gold standard leader of men but you should be able to demonstrate potential in this field and, also, experience. Cadet organisations, Reserves, Duke of Edinburgh award, Scouts, Guides, whatever; they all have opportunities for you to develop your leadership skills and training. If you're just going to do nothing and expect it to be alright on the day, then expect to fail at the AIB when you undertake the leadership tasks. These are skills that you can learn (as even I showed as a 16 year old), so dig in and get some experience on which you can embellish

  14. Good reposte their from Pontius :wink: Just to add a few more tips for you. That you should be the ace of the base, with your flying skills, and have no intrest in ornithology, Bird strikes will not endear you !!! in the eyes of the grubbers . Also your ability to be an outstanding D.O. as well as a FAA pilot is essential. You must show leadership akin to the Dalai Lama, and defence skills equivialant of George Carman QC. when defending you squadron ratings at defaulters :lol: :lol:
  15. Not to forget the flexibilty to deal with the 'other' issues that come up when standing in front of the Commander. You know, the ones that AEM (or whatever they're called now) Bloggs forgot to mention when he promised you that is was only the 5 things he'd done wrong. Faced with an additonal 5, as they're read to you for the first time, you must be able to keep a straight face (without sighing loudly) and act as if you'd known about those all along and use your razor-like thinking to conjour up mitigating circumstances for throwing the bouncer in the Tyne etc.

    (I actually enjoyed the DO bit but don't let my mates know.......if I had any of course :) )
