Shrinking Navy

Hopefully it is a scare proposal that has been binned. I am suspicious as there are so many errors in the article, eg:

New destroyers already commissioned??

But I am very, very worried that it seems to imply that there will be no minehunters ffs!!!

Hope it's nothing more than a nasty rumour, although I had a feeling that there would be a high price for all those nice new boats and carriers.
As a show of solidarity I expect that the next move will be a shrinking/disappearing Army and RAF. :pukel:

Whilst one hopes this is only a worst case offered to the mandarins, one can't help noticing errors in the Telegraph's graphic, ref the current number of patrol vessels, the number of ordered T45s vis the number of T42s scheduled to pay off and the number of "University Research Ships" what ever they are...

It means the end of he URNU's. Any loss of hulls has to be discouraged.

Very badly written tbh, I'm skeptical.

The CSR isn't due for confirmation until November although most departments are aware of their settlement at this time.

But there are a lot of basic errors there.

If the Tories ever want my vote again then they need to make a v.strong commitment to defence, especially the RN, at their conference. This is one area (the only real one?) where they can put clear blue water between themselves and New Labour...

My fear is when the Tories talk about matching commitments to resources they are talking about cutting commitments rather than increasing fundng.

What the Gord giveth, the Gord taketh away...

If there is a shred of truth in any of this, we really are going to hell in a handcart as a maritime nation without the ability to defend our worldwide interests. Much looking forward to the DIN, Galaxy or whatever denying it all before morale ends up in the bilges.

Sorry who gives a flying shag about how many ships weve got, when weve got no JRs to crew them.
We ve just come out of refit passed the ready for sea inspection but unable to go to sea for another month due to lack of senior ABs and LHs. But hey ho.
Nice to see what they are going to man these new carriers with, blow up ppl maybe..........

I went to a RN presentation down in Falmouth as my company was invited. So went along to find out what the current score was with the RN

Anyways they started talking about having to moth ball loads of ships etc due to man power then going on about new type 45's and carriers.

I asked if they're having to moth ball ships due to lack of man power how can they man these new ships. They went on about this top mast system which doesn't seem to be working.

Especially if Mac is saying they can't crew his ship to go to sea for another month.

Not convinced that the story is genuine. More like a retread of an old media article wheeled out every Party Conference season. However as long as this country can't feed itself (and more mouths to feed every day) we need the means to secure our sea trade.

I've just heard a quote from a "MoD Spokesmen" on the radio saying "no decision" had been made to make any further cuts to the Fleet.
That pretty much confirms it then :thumright:

I think we were all a little bit naive in thinking we'd get 2 new carriers, T45 and the ASTUTES without something else having to go. This lot in Westminster don't understand defence and never will. Time these 2 new carriers emerge, their escorts will meet them off Pompey - 2 requisitioned Gosport ferries !

Exactly. Never believe anything until it's officially been denied...
