Sea Spec Waiting Time

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Hi got told by my Afco the waiting time has gone up too 48 months. This must be the longest waiting time to get into the services. Can you change to a different branch and carry on from your original waiting time. Or will you have to start again. the reason I'm asking this is because of my age by the time I join. Thanks.

Best bet is to nip into your AFCO & ask.

It's a difficult call as the advice is to choose the job you want rather than be influenced by the time it takes to join because the jobs are very different.

For those faced with waits of up to four years and a limited opportunity of joining, it maybe worth looking toward the RFA or the RNR as each have wider age parameters, albeit differing jobs.
  3. Thanks Ninja Il give my Afco a ring Monday again. I'm already in the RNR thanks.
  4. I feel very sorry for people wanting to join the mob and having to wait so long. I joined as a Junior Seaman aged 16 years and 4 best I get my 11 year old daughter down the AFCO as she wants to join straight from school.

If your dughter's 11, she can't leave full time education until 18, therefore the best bet is to apply aged 15 & 9 months then hopefully have a job waiting after leaving school/college/uni.

Hopefully, things will chanege for the better before then.

It could be worse, she could decide to join the RAF.
  6. What's the old saying?

"I'd rather have a daughter in a whore house than a son in the RAF"
  7. Are you certain that it will it be open? Some are likely be shut for the Bank Holiday..............
  8. Oh yeah I forgot it's a bank holiday Tuesday it shall be. Just added iv been waiting for 23 months already.
  9. Am in the same situation sat the recruit test in sept 10 for sea spec knew it was 30 + 6 (raleigh closure) months then.If another 12 months added to that would take me to 37 years old and too old!Can you switch to your second choice in this case or you'd have to start from scratch and resit rt again?Would'nt want to wait 4 years and then be refused for being over age limit for any rating position!RFA is a good option but sounds like they may also open up rating vacancies applications when im 64 at the moment.
  10. Serious question as I don't take much notice of stuff like this nowadays, but has it really gone up by two years?

Yep, 'fraid so with regard school leaving age, although they can leave at 16 & start a registered apprenticeship ...such as those for most trades in the RN.

Seaman Specalist is only a small branch and the branch literature (see below) alludes you spend all your days messing about in fast boats which draws in a surplus of applicants. The odd thing about the branch is that the MWS have being trying to update the careers publications for years to give a more accurate portrayal of the job to reduce the number of disaffected joiners, horrified that they have to learn flashing light communication & by the fact they spend most of the time in the classroom rather than messing about on the river. For one reason or another, that has never happened, so we have a seriously over-subscribed branch.

    Oooh aarrghh.

Fact is that Warfare Specialist could also claim much of the above.
  12. and still nowhere near enough Leading Hands!
  13. I do or have done and more :D
  14. But are you a killick?! ;)

Yep, I reckon a lot of WS(MW) & Divers likewise.
  16. And maybe the odd Warfare Officer..... (and a Weapon Engineer Officer or two!)
  17. I think its the "making this a real life at sea" line in the careers brochure that does it!None of the other ratings jobs say anything as exciting as this in all honesty even they all must be a "real life at sea"...being carried out on ships!
  18. Ninja are they now handing dates out for the end of this year. If I waited 23 months for sea spec will I be waiting until the 48 months are done or can I get a date at anytime. It would be handy if those of us waiting so long that it takes us over the age limit that we could take our second choice.
  19. im on a 24 month waiting list for cis, i went into my careers office about joining the RNR whilst i wait and they said no because by the time i have finished phase 1 training it might be time for me to go to raleigh, so they have stopped people from doing that, what about joining theRFA? would that be the same situation?
  20. WHAT!? Four whole years that's ridiculous, would this be due to university fees rises therefore school leavers are deciding to opt for an armed forces route instead of academic? Are the waiting times likely to fluctuate up and down over the course of a year though or is it a steady rise?

I'm looking into joining as either a ME (SM) or MA (SM) but a 4 year wait is a hell of a long time, i'll be nearly 30 and may have a family and kids and would perhaps just have to stay in my civilian job due to financial commitments...or maybe not..

Is this an average wait across the board or just for this specific job, what are ME (SM) and MA (SM) like out of curiosity?
