Scurvy........... and the cure.

Used to use strong limers to soak the evap condenser tubes, plus other gratings, filters etc. Leave for 24 hours and they came up clean as a new pin.
Sauerkraut became an anti scurvy staple in the RN. Sailors liked it so much there are accounts of hands being flogged for breaking into barrels of the stuff. It had the advantage of being far richer in vit C than limes and lemons and the vit C didn't decline in storage.
