    SIR – HMS Cumberland was only available to rescue evacuees from Libya because she was making her way home to be scrapped, together with her Type 22 sister ships Chatham, Cornwall and even the magnificent Campbeltown – only just back at sea after a year-long refit but still due to be decommissioned on April 7.
    HMS Ark Royal would have been a comforting sight off the Libyan coast, but the defence review has put paid to her, too.

  2. So short sighted of this government. I so wish they would rethink there policy.
    In an uncertain world why cut our defences to the bone. It beggers belief.
