Russians sink Chinese Merchant Ship

Discussion in 'Current Affairs' started by Nutty, Feb 20, 2009.

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. A Chinese ship detained by the Russians on suspicion of smuggling tried to do a runner and was sunk. To be fair if it had been a Russian ship legging it from the Chinese they would have done the same. Now what the RN would have done in these circumstances is very open to conjecture.

    Sunk

The mighty RN would of got the trusty mega phone taken to the bridge wings and gone.."I say...stop....please....c'mon now....stop messing..oy you....come back...please...please..." :director:

Then wondered why the Government had sent them out with such p1ss poor rules of engagement.....again.

  3. Probably wouldn't have been able to keep up with it long enough to throw anything sharp at it since the gun was OPDEF, the helo has no fuel, missile firing has to be sanctioned by Whitehall following submission of a full cost-benefit justification in triplicate etc.

At least we wouldn't have filled it full of "at least 500 rounds" doesn't say 500 rounds of what calibre but you can bet your bottom dollar it was a bit more meaty than AK47 - crikey that is next to a full allowance for the entire fleet!

  4. I loved this bit!

"The incident will cast a shadow over generally improving relations between the two countries, who have a long history of mutual distrust following border skirmishes in the 1960s"

500 rounds fired. Like thats going to really help diplomatic ties!!!!

  5. Heres what really happened.Boris ordered No 46 which as you all know is Chicken Curry with flied lice. Fu Manchu had run out so he slips in No 59 which as you all know is Labrador in Hoi Sin with plain rice.

And thats when the fight started.

  6. That old plain rice for fried rice switch gets them every time!

Thanks for the inside gen 4to8 - I did wonder what it was REALLY about

  7. Oddly enough, rice seems to have featured in this incident. The subject vessel appears to have been under 'security arrest', traditionally implemented by nailing a writ to the mast, owing to a dispute over its cargo of stale rice (link). The Russian Federation is a signatory (link) of the 1952 International Convention Relating to the Arrest of Sea-Going Ships, otherwise known as the 1952 Brussels Convention. Article One of the Convention contains this clause:

    However, Article Two states:

Although the Convention does not specifically preclude sinking a ship resulting in crew members losing their lives over a contested cargo, I'm not sure this is quite what was in mind.

  8. This is probably the most factual posting ever to appear on RR.

  9. The RN would have pursued the chinese vessel, and then sent a boarding party carrying the ships laundry for the dhoby wallah, and some orders for new suits from the chinese tailors!

We couldn't pursue (can't afford to run gassies at max chat) so we'd pick a chain smoking, fat, rats killick wren and a nobber with an ipod to go over there and swap a rib for a small fortune in cash. Everyone's a winner!
