The soldier's lawyer - who was appointed by the Ukrainian state - has told me that no Russian official has been in touch with him, including from the defence ministry.
There is no Russian embassy in Kyiv these days, so no contact from there either.
President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman told the BBC on Wednesday that the Kremlin has “no information” about this case.
All in all, it feels rather like the young soldier has been abandoned to his fate by the commanders who sent him to war and continue to deny that their forces commit crimes here.
This trial is Ukraine’s chance to prove, beyond doubt, that a Russian soldier killed a civilian with no regard for the rules of war.
It knows it’s in the spotlight, doing this so quickly and in the middle of a war, and it’s keen to be as transparent and thorough as possible – so that this is not seen as a show trial, but part of a vital quest for justice.

Russia has called for the lifting of sanctions that were imposed over its invasion of Ukraine as part of a "comprehensive approach" aimed at averting a global food crisis.
Ukraine is one of the world's top grain exporters but it has built up vast stockpiles that it is unable to send abroad due to a Russian blockade of its ports.
The Kremlin's Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko said Russia was ready to provide a humanitarian corridor that would allow ships a safe route out of Ukraine - if sanctions were lifted and Kyiv de-mined nearby waters.
Yesterday, the European Union accused Russia of using food supplies as a weapon with global repercussions.
Earlier, the UK's Ministry of Defence said food prices worldwide would keep going up while the impasse continued.

I seem to remember being told in training that one of the key roles of the RN was to keep international trade routes open.
I know it's easy for me to sit at home and advocate intervention - but surely when the world starves because of ONE man then it's time to act.
I believe that a NATO fleet - Yanks/UK/Frogs etc in overwhelming force - should be deployed to the Black Sea to escort cargo ships out - and it should be made quite clear to Vlad what will happen to his fleet if it tries to intervene. I know it will mean mine clearance etc but the time really has arrived and the west cannot sit idly by and watch this catastrophic scene unfold any longer

Less of the bigger war canoes and more the FAC's. Quick in/out tactics with fast moving missile boats.

Yes all well good having these large units however when you cannot even muster a full fixed wing squadron on one let alone two, when you haven’t got enough sailors to man the top t’gallants or even think about damage control, they’re something of an irrelevance.

Not sure how current you are J, but that's not something the Navy of today need worry about!
