Rumour: RFA to merge with RN?

Discussion in 'The Fleet' started by dunkers, Jun 17, 2007.

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Have heard a buzz that the RFA is to be merged into the RN. RFA ships to become HMS, RFA officers to become RN officers. (The first step towards this has already happened; RFA officers are to sit AIBs now.)

    Anyone heard anything about this?

RFA officers have been undergoing training at BRNC for some years now. Not all officers do it, and their 8 week syllabus is a very condensed version. But they are starting to integrate....

AFCO's now supply RFA recruiting literature & all RFA ratings undergo the Recruiting Test. We are now one of the first point of contact for RFA applicants.

    Ha! Really?

  5. Isn't there a small handful of RFA PWOs as well, ISTR a couple going through the A stream in the mid 90s.

Can't be arsed with a pissing contest, but T42s were the last ships we played compensated tanks with. The volume of fuel is completely irrelevant, the principles are identical.

Strangely the Ocean, Bulwark & Albion carry cargo, some of it with wheels too, oh & a big floody bit at the back for the latter two. Agreed the OOWs would need to do cargo tickets, but then it's about time they had civilian accredited tickets anyway- something the RN has stopped short of so as they don't lose them when qualified.

  7. All Tanks on T23's are uncomp if memory serves.
Which leaves not many ships with comp tanks :)

  8. On a similar theme, given the reducing number of escorts shouldn't those RFA's fitted "for but not with" Seawolf, should now have it fitted?

  9. It will happen, they have been using the Knights as el cheapo gunboats in teh Carribean for a few years now,

Decades ago BAE were trying to sell a containerised Seawolf system - lift it onboard, plug'n'play. Saw it at an RNEE in the eighties.

  11. It's probably being done to get Edward into the mob via the back door!

  12. When I worked for BAe as a field engineer installing Phalanx on RN ships I suggested to my boss that we should offer a bolt on bolt off model for use on RFAs. At that time RFAs were unarmed and nothing came of it, now I suppose it would be a possibility.
Phalanx as opposed to Goalkeeper is very much a what you see is what you get system which could easily be fitted and removed at will.

  13. Not too long ago on a visit to FLEET, we were told that all the Bay Class LSD(A)'s were going to be transfered over to the White Ensign over a four year period.

Used as floating classrooms to avoid the Jetty Bulge and get lots of all ranks OJT. Perhaps this is the start of the takeover????

Agreed, hopefully the RN bridge watchkeepers will finally get the ticket which will be recognised in the civilian industry too.

  15. The fact that the RN cannot man it's all it's present hulls whilst maintaining harmony is a fact that is not lost on the hierarchy. Taking over four additional hulls would be at the cost of other ships or activity. White Flagged LSDA's - not on my watch!

  16. Is this a way of the politicians being able to say they have increased the size of the fleet?

Good point &, now I think about it, bloody spot -on!

  18. RFA are already under command of CINC anyway, so it wouldn't have an impact on the hull numbers.

  19. When it comes to man power new RFA rating are being brought on as RNR and the justification given is that they would be treated under the Geneva conventions when the Iranians kidnap them.

Civvies (AKA RFA) currently have no such protection.

  20. I don't pretend to understand the workings out of our manpower experts in FLEET. However remember they are lean manned and according to the 3- ring expert, he could man the first one tomorrow!

And isn't TOPMAST a trial? might not last forever then there's a lot of squad members without bunks ashore!
