In The Navy!

While playing through Need For Speed: Carbon recently, we noticed that the Challenge3 time trial was plagued with adverts to join the Royal Navy. It isn't just one advert either; we spotted the naval recruitment ads on the sides of buildings and billboards all around the track. As far as we can tell, the adverts appeared when we patched the game to version 1.3. We asked the Ministry of Defence why it thought a game that simulates illegal underground racing in America was a prime target for British naval recruitment, but we've yet to receive an answer.

I bet the MOD didn't have a clue that the ads were in the game! I suspect that a huge chunk of cash thrown at some modern. hip and trendy advertising company resulted in the virtual ads appearance. Long gone are the days when recruiters do their own dirty work, consultants are the way ahead for advertising, management etc, more's the merrier especially when you have your own pocket lined on retirement! Did I say that? must have slipped into cynical mode again.

Levers,
As usual you are pretty much right in your eloquent but cynical way, not wishing to add to it and not wishing to sound overly cynical myself I would disagree with one point and that is the retention of recruits. Currently one of our biggest problems is maintaining the standard, I have witnessed at least two completely unacceptable recruits(in my opinion! but obviously not someone else's) being pushed through the system in the last 3 months, we are doing neither ourselves or them any favours by retaining them. Don't get me wrong I am more than happy with the majority of students who come through the AET recruiting system, they are in the main intelligent, keen and capable but the odd one who would previously have been removed from the training pool at Raleigh or Sultan pretty sharpish is being pushed through and given "just one more chance!" at an ever increasing frequency, it is a worrying trend. If in your branch you are losing the chaff along the way good on you.

And I bet they ******* well did. You'd be surprised at the amount of co-promotional branding that takes place, even in the most unlikely places. Submilinal messaging, get the name of the 'product' on people lips (even if they have to move their lips whilst reading it, mind)

As a small businessman I have been invited to a presentation (with refreshments) at Rugby school with the theme. “The future role of the Royal Navy in today’s society” given by a RN team that is touring the country.

Methinks pusser is targeting the wrong people.

..............They wanted me to speak in Arabic at the Camera, then break into English at the last minute and say something beginning with..."but the best thing, is......".............

Bloody hell.

It wasn't that long ago that mentioning the branch outside the wire was verboten.

They have eased off on the whole secret squirrel thing, we are allowed to know they exist but not what the best thing about the branch is

Edited for mong spelling!

The thing is mate, I couldn't think of anything to say and I can't remember what it was they told me to come out with

As for the mentioning the branch outside the wire....it's not a problem nowadays as Chieftiff correctly says, we were briefed not to mention anything that you wouldn't find out from the careers brochures or website.

That makes sense I guess, it's about six years since I was involved at that end of the process so I'm not entirely up to date on how things we're dealing with it.

……

As I recall the RN Presentation Team (Cdr, Lt/ Lt Cdr and WO1 plus a couple of AB/ LH) are intended to talk to the 'great and the good, local decision maker' type audience, rather than being a direct part of the recruitment effort.

Because they're talking to influencers in the community it is supposed to create a 'favourable impression' of what we do in the community. To an extent it creates the environment where people will sign up to their sons and daughters joining up. They also do some visits to MOD sites, in the early part of the year, to introduce the Civil Servants to the working end of their job.

I saw it about 4 years ago in an Army camp I was stationed at and it was a pretty slick effort, of course the cynic in me could pick a lot of holes in what they were saying, but I'm not part of the target audience.

I made a point of having a chat to the JRs at the time, I was in civvies that day, and they made an extremely good showing of themselves. From what I picked up later the impact of that was much more than the presentation itself. I made a point of dropping a quick email to the Cdr afterwards just to make sure they were recognised for that.
