Royal Brunei BAe Corvettes

Thought exactly the same when I heard Cornwall couldn't get close enough due to her draught! Mind surely the same could be said for putting an MCM on station there, for increased defence.

:( I bought ALBION out of build and spent 3 long, awful years on it. BAe are 'Bloody Awful Engineering'! They ignored common sense engineering and went with cheap and unsuitable. They used every trick in the contract to avoid building what Pusser wanted and paid for. I was asked to bring DARING out as well; I turned them down. It is turning out to be another ship that will be FUBAR.

Sorry to bump this back to the top, but how long does this aribitration take? Does anyone see these vessels on the Clyde? Are they really just wasting away still? Surely it must be costing someone, something to be keeping these alongside?

Any ideas of what will happen to these vessels if the arbitration goes against BAE?

The arbitration is over according to Jane's this week. RBN have accepted the ships off contract (no indication of how much any compensation may be) but are NOT going to take them in service. They have apparently appointed Lurssen to act as agent to sell them on the open market. Can jsut see BAE rubbing tehir hands together here - whoever buys them will have to pay BAE/MBDA to support the Wolf. I wonder how much they'll get for them, given the knowledge that they're not very good......

Thanks for that, so if they are as awful as everyone is making out then who in their right minds would buy them? An Coalition gift to the Iraqi Navy to get them going in lieu of proper aid?

I heard the MOD had approved funding for the demonstration phase of a corvette program, supposedly to replace FF/DD’s as West Indies guard ship and other low intensity comitments, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we ended up with the Brunei corvettes after all.

Bit big for the Iraqis. Look what happened to the Italian ships they tried to buy in the 80s.

As you say - "who in their right minds........?"

Oh - wait a minute, according to sensible dunny, here come the MoD......

I think what he's actually referring to is the S2C2 / Pathfinder / FSC programme which has just gone into concept phase. No demonstration prog AFAIK.

No they won't. That's what RBNTS want for them, but they ain't going to get it, particularly as the majority of the combat / weapon system fit is bespoke and needs to be supported by BAe. Would you pay £200M each for ships that require a totally separate logistic support contract on top?

Particularly as they should be seen as spoiled goods. Don't believe the spin in the article as to who found in favour of who......

I foree an elite TOPMAST team forming at UM QUASR with a hight limit of 5'8" and some extra berths being built! RN Training Team (Seawolf) anyone?

In my dream world the government would decide that they were not spending enough on the RNR and so buy each of the RNR regions a Corvette such as this and let us help out the UK border police preventing illegal immigrants getting into the country.

But then I woke up!!

Jane's reports all three of them moving to Barrow for layup while Lurssen (RBNTS contracted agent) try to find a buyer.

Upholders were in Barrow for nearly 10 years. Any bets these'll be any quicker to be sold?

I think the only time the RN has done what you describe was with the old HMS Mermaid, a ship originally built for Ghana.

And look what happened with Mermaid - a non-standard design compared to other RN warships (a much shorter fo'c'sle) and the then less understood cocnept of the Resistance Barrier during RASing. Led to the loss of the Fittleton and 12 lives.
