Role/branch change once in the Navy?

A week until I go to Raleigh and start my career as an AET. Definitely looking forward to it and will try to get the most out of it as I can, however, what's the likelihood that in, say 5 years, that I could change to become a Pilot? (Always wanted to be one since a wee lad).

Would I stand a higher chance since I would already be in the Navy? Would I have to retake basic training?

Thanks lads

Assuming you are academically eligible, medically fit for flying duties, are within the entry age parameters, recommended and pass aircrew selection (Flying Aptitude) and the Admiralty Interview Board (AIB) at a sufficiently high enough level to be selected, there's certainly a possibility ...however, the only assured way of becoming a trainee pilot is by joining as a trainee pilot.

As Ninj is honour bound to give you a proper answer, I will give you the skinny.
When a class shows up at Raleigh and get their first few lectures under their belt, they may ask how many of you want to become Naval Pilots, about 50% or more will put up their mitt, a lot are AE but plenty of WE, ME and other assorted oikery will too. Competition is high. Being AE and qualifying for upper stream tech, or even AE officer is no guarantee of favour in selection.

If you want to fly for a living, give it serious thought. In the meantime, as a WAFU you will at least be familiar with aircraft and could conceivably do something about it, like going for a civvy PPL or signing your soul to the airlines on leaving. Be careful of the age barriers in the service, as the Pusser has them for a reason, lots of guys I knew in their mid 20's were trying to get CW papers raised and get an AIB passed, leaving them basically only one shot at the process. Listen to your uncle Ninj, if you reeeeeeeeeally want to be a trainee pilot, then join as one.

Hanz how old are you now? Age may be your greatest threat.
If you are currently not academically qualified to Be a fly boy, what is the likelihood of you be coming SQ? With only a week to go you had better have a serious chat with your recruiter, and see what is required for direct entry fly boy?
Good luck.

Your best chance of becoming a pilot from the lower deck, is to join as a chef :)

18, was hoping to try and get a foundation degree out of my time as an AET then look at switching to pilot. I know it's a far fetched thought but no harm in trying ;)

There is never any arm in setting yourself gaols/targets in life.

Make sure your targets a realistic and focused on the direction you want to go, no point in bust a gut for 5 years to find you did not do the right degree?

It may be best to get you basic training out of the way before declaring your future aim, no point in making yourself a target, then once settled speak to your DO about your future aims.

Not sure if you get to speak to any personnel officer types during training?

Good luck

You can currently apply to become a Pilot in the Army as a Junior Rate in the RN. You'll need to have passed your taskbooks to become an AET1.

The best way to become a Pilot is to have joined as a Pilot from the off.
