RNR - OPV

You haven't been in the RN(R) long have you?
I like to be optimistic. :)

On the other hand there is a great book that may be relevant here.
Not my normal read but having had to read it a couple of years ago it is actually rather good, and I would highly recommend it to both the Military and Civilian world.

Yeah well they need to man it to get it in service. RN is half the commissioning engineers.

Part-manning an OPV with Reservists might help! Currently, there are quite a few reservists doing the job of regulars in OPVs and driving Ribs. This is, I'm sure, set to increase. Oak trees start small!

We're 3000 people short of making that plan come true.
So a priority for SDSR15 is to increase personnel numbers?

I remember a previous CMR talking before SDSR10 about the Reserves being used to preserve core capabilities not currently being used. Post SDSR, when there was that sort of plan the politicians said no.

RN people numbers are the vital ground for SDR15; without people you can have all the Fantasy Fleets you like.
Well let's hope all those extra officers we've got, so we can get really great senior ones, can get us some more then. Otherwise it's all been a bit pointless. A return to enough to do 2 years on ship, 2 years off would be ideal.

Then we'll just need to get through God knows how many years til we have enough people to do it. A drawdown is a whole lot faster than building back up again.

If it's of any value, Raleigh NE numbers will be increasing as of next year. Just have to retain them then!

Need to train them first. An unfortunate side effect of fewer ships is less space for trainees. You can turn the recruiting and Raleigh taps on as much as you want, all you'll get is a jetty bulge of hacked off lads waiting for their first ship. Carriers used to take up a lot of training burden but we've just got shot of the last and the new one won't take up any load for many years yet.

Heard from a 4 ringer a couple of days ago that they would be deployed abroad perhaps ramping up stations for larger platforms.

What can an OPV actually do? WTF is "ramping up stations"?
What an RFA can do but with less space and cant support a Helo, while actually being Naval ships.

I think he means freeing up low end jobs to free up high end escorts for the sharper end of our commitments.
And like EQG has just said HMS Severn is now doing this.

Thread revival.....

Right, now we are at (fishing) war with the traditional enemy..https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-45337091... I assume that my telephone will be ringing shortly?!!

I'm poised to do the operational analysis on what calibre and nature of ammunition is best used to reduce intruding Frenchmen to pink mist and smoking boots... isn't this a good opportunity for some live-fire training? Targets will explode, burn and scream when hit...
