RNR Intelligence - Marooned at Chicksands?

#1
Good morning,

I am interested in the RNR Intelligence Branch route and I live near Bristol.

Is it possible to pursue this specialisation away from Chicksands? I understand that serving in the Intelligence Branch will not require evening drill sessions. However, it would still mean a long drive for me from Somerset to Bedfordshire at the weekends.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

Should I interpret your response as pithiness, BillyNoMates?

A quote from your link: "I am confident that you will enjoy living at Chicksands, and that you will find both the location and the local community welcoming and fulfilling"...

It's a national unit with members coming in from all over the place (south coast, Scotland, Norn Iron...) While not all its training and work is done at Chicksands, you'd do your Fundamentals there first; once qualified, the #2 site worked at is RAF Wyton (nearby, just outside Huntingdon) and then a distant third is HMS Collingwood near Portsmouth.

Sadly, this does mean that (in your case), if you choose to pursue a role there, you will become very familiar with the M4-M25-M1 and then alternative routes... you'll get time and travel for the journeys, but you will have to figure that into any planning. A degree of common sense and flexibility is applied (for instance, folk thin out on Sunday as required to catch their planes, trains and automobiles home) but it's very much the case that if you're interested in this branch, you'll have to go to it rather than it come to you.

It's not an exclusive issue, though - some folk do pretty much exclusively branch work despite the travel issues, while others retain ties to local units and put some time in there as well as whatever they're up to at Chicksands.

Further to @jrwlynch 's post above.

You should also be aware that you will be able/expected to do normal drill nights at your local unit - in your case HMS Flying Fox - especially during Phase One. It is only for National Branch Weekends and "Specialist" Training that you will need to do the travelling that Mr Lynch so ably describes.

As I say in all the RNR Newbie threads : Engage with your local unit in the first instance.

True, that.

To clarify and include what I should have said first time around; if you came into the RNR, you'd do the standard Phase 1 at Flying Fox, then choose your branch, which if you went for Intelligence would involve attending a selection weekend towards the end of / shortly after your Phase 1 training. (You should have some chance to explore branch options during Phase 1 anyway, your options are open up to that point).

......and your new identity will be tailor made to meet the needs of your new career.

I did most of my commissioned RNR service as an intelligence bod, but was based at various HQs, rather than spending all my time at Chicksands (which was almost entirely Crab in my day). I've now been out of the Andrew for 22 years (much of it spent overseas) and a lot has changed.
