Current entry into the Warfare Specialist Intelligence WS (INT) specialisation is by Lateral Entry (LE) from all RN branches and to achieve the required numbers a Direct Entry (DE) scheme is to be introduced.

Being in Intelligence means that you work with all disciplines within the Royal Navy and other services to deliver Intelligence to Commanders on operations. Your training will enable you to deliver fused Intelligence products and provide advice on emerging situations and deliver bespoke briefings to senior officers. Providing your Intelligence input will aid in mission success.

Intelligence is critical in supporting warfighting and getting the right information to the right people at the right time so that crucial decisions, that affect lives, can be made. Everything could depend on your speed, skill, accuracy and powers of concentration to keep one step ahead of the enemy

Expect a phonecall. Nuff said.

One of the weirdy things about intelligence, apart from the weirdos what do it, is rank doesn't really count for much. The person best experienced is the person doing the brief or taking the lead.

You'll find 35 year old AB SMEs telling people many ranks senior how things are going to happen. Few realise James Bond was only a killick dabber dressed as a Commander.

It's a bit like my AFCO really :)

Some questions..

(based on a T23/T45)
What will be your PoS?
Where will you be for Specials
What flats will you have on board......

These are what grips people daily and should be made a littler clear(er) from the off.
Seeing as an AB, this will be your world, be good if a tiny bit of expectation management is provided at the start/Phase 2.

WS(INT), already exists. The 'off' started a while ago. It's not EW and not CT.

Post #1 refers regarding common sense & being a team player, #6 refers to role.

So far as I'm aware we all have to clean or paint shithouses and bathrooms from time to time because they don't parachute our Mummies or Daddies out to do it for us. I even had to wash my own cup this morning, no-one told me that before I joined either. The swines.

Specials, I'd imagine are determined by geographic location and the requirement to gather intelligence, together with the individual's whole ship commitments.

It's doubtful someone yet to join has a clue what T23/45, PoS, Specials or Flats actually are to be honest.

By way of an example, I didn't even know I was a "Stoker" until after I joined. I thought Stoker was some sort of menial job that the poor people do - turns-out I was right.

The branch won’t have sea billets except on the QE Class CV’s.

Really??!! I just leave mine on my desk and fight a battle of wills with the cleaner until she gives up and washes it or I die of some horrific disease. Of course the fact that I've spent all weekend with a burning fever and wishing I was dead might suggest she's winning.

Cheers, every day's a school day to be honest.

The beauty of this particular specialisation, if anyone asks anything, we can just give an officious sniff, tap the side of the starboard nostril and declare "Secret, innit?" :)
Surprised you AFCOs didn’t all get the Project Blinker Hall Roadshow Presentation. Explains all. It’s on MODNET. Branch developing for next decade or so, but only sea liability the carriers. Lots of battlestaff/RAF Wyton/Northwood type shore drafts going. It’ll be an interesting career.

Have you any more info on what Supplement level the branch is on yet? Sideways entrants are remaining on their source branch pay until this is sorted out, but if you’re recruiting direct entry, I guess you must know the pay?

Sniff. Secret innit?

You raise an interesting and valid point though. The New Entry Rate of pay is irrespective of Supp1,2,3 etc. for non accelerated apprenticeships. Most enquirers are bombarded with info when they join and few pay any heed to what supp they're on as a Chief in a dozen or more years time, so the question is very seldom raised and the data sheet pushed out by the branch doesn't say owt. It does say they pass out as an AB2 though.

Applicants do actually get saturated with info, to the extent they tend to only retain the good bits.

I always ask: "Who do you reckon cleans your bogs, you or me?"' To which they dutifully reply "Me, Sir"

I then offer to bet them 50p they'll forget this conversation ever happened within 12 months and drip like ten that no-one ever told them about it. (Post #7 refers).

Cheers, good shout. We have now received the Blinker Hall presentation.

Hi Ninja,

Just FYI, I think the role has finally been posted on the RN's website:
https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/career...surface-fleet/warfare-specialist-intelligence

I find it a bit curious though, that it seems to mention mine hunting, in the Professional Training bit at the end:
After your initial training you’ll complete three months at the Maritime Warfare School, which will cover:

  • Learning various types of mines and how they operate
  • Understanding how different mines are used in war
  • Training in mine disposal techniques
  • Becoming skilled in mine detection, including using mine-hunting sonar
  • Learning to launch and operate a remote-controlled unmanned vehicle
Must be either a mistake or a legendary way of streaming folks to pinch-point trades, when they thought they applied for something else. Maybe that should be done when people apply for Warfare or Weapon Engineering: just send them straight off to do an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Professional Cookery, working towards a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery and Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality and Catering Principles. With a little luck, they can be told they're keeping the real weapons down where the ME's are, working. :D

The apparent error in detail:

- The Mine Intelligence Specialist image, links to the first link in this post about Warfare Intelligence and not to anything related to mines.

- Then on the Warfare Intelligence page, under the Professional Training bit, it contains the text from Mine Warfare Specialist Professional Training, as mentioned earlier.

Finally, I think it's worth mentioning in your OP that you apparently:

"Gain a Level 4 Apprenticeship Standard for Intelligence operations"

Which I think is significant, since that means the RN has just defanged the RAF, whom lay claim to being the only one to supply a Level 4 Apprenticeship and in that field, according to their own site:
The RAF Int An Apprenticeship Centre currently delivers a Higher
Apprenticeship in Intelligence Operations, comprising a Level
4 Diploma in Intelligence Operations and Level 4 Certificate
in the Knowledge of Defence Intelligence Operations. This
apprenticeship is offered to all Phase 2 airmen and women. The
Higher Apprenticeship in Intelligence Operations was launched
in September 2015 and is the highest level of Apprenticeship
Scheme available within any of HM Armed Forces.
Although the RN text says "Standard" where the RAF actually mentions a Certificate. So that could use some clarification I think. Similarly, I hope they amend the text regarding what skills one will obtain, as it's looking pretty bleak currently for the Warfare Int crowd:
Skills you'll develop
  • Learn firefighting and weapon handling skills
But forget what I said earlier; if we're going to stream Warfare Intelligence recruits somewhere, then send them to the chaplaincy.

Kind regards.

Hi,

Really interested in this!

What is the wait time to get to Raleigh?

Just had a look through the comments and I think it says that this is more of a shore bound job as opposed to sea-going, any idea where you could be based? (Travel is one of my main reasons for joining!)

Thank you :)
