A new book, 'Phoenix Squadron' by Rowland White, Bantam Press 2009, recounts the first Phantom commission of Ark Royal IV up to her intervention in what was then British Honduras, in 1972. The political background, and demonstration of the absolute need for a proper RN capability for force projection, are well treated and are highly relevant today. The book, although written in breathless journalese, goes into considerable and informative detail on many aspects of FAA operations and the author has dug deep in the way of official documents and personal interviews. It contains several salutary reminders of the dangerous life the FAA lead. Recommended to all hands.
