You've raised a few pulses on this one. You know who I am, same name same cap tally's 1980-86. Personally I thoroughly enjoy this forum and look forward to reading it regularly. It's raw; It's witty and it is so funny and a true reflection on what I like to remember as the Mob. Much better than our old one which I have to say, by being so insular, just reminded me of all those Old tossers climbing over each others backs up the slippery pole that gave me such a hard time during my 16yr commish. Of course I also support a closed system but only for the hard knocks news about old oppos now residing in the Seafield Park of the skies or something equally private but lighten up! This forum is great. It has me in stiches. Jack is the funniest "human being(?)" that God ever made. Only one month old and already a roaring success, this site is going to soar (sic).
Incidentally for all the non WAFU's out there, you coin the acronym with perverse glee but do you know what it means. Answers on a Post Card to...........

I do see the point, the trouble is firstly this environment sometimes does not allow for fresh ideas to be presented in the same way as face to face talking and consequently your proposal came over as very patronizing and pompous, although I’m sure that was not your intention. Another thing with forums is the freedom of anyone to express their opinion, usually this will be valid but can also be restricted to carping about other posts.
I personally enjoy telling stories, and sometimes they can take 4 or 5 hours to write but I have been beaten up on forums so many times I have lost count, so now I’m always careful to be considerate and accurate with my stuff.
However this hasn’t stopped the beatings.
Perhaps you are being a little overprotective with your group and if you let them out into the big wide world you might find they do in fact have the literal skills to send any potential flamers running for cover.
Think again, the fact that so many don`t want you lot to roll up one trouser leg and kiss the chickens arrse behind closed doors should be seen as a compliment.
And although I can understand why you want to do it, I personally hope you don’t, as I feel that we will have lost a section of the forum that would be of great interest to members and lurkers alike.

Uncle Albert... believe me I don't have to restrain the members I am attracting to Rum Ration... they are already participating with glee (and sending me good feedback about the move)

Sorry if original mesage came over as pompous... that's not me. Like you I have suffered many on-line tongue lashings in other Forums, it seems to be an occupational hazard of contributing?

The group may be opened idc... but only on requst of the members or on instruction from the administrators. Frankly, I'd rather do that than lose it (it's going well so far), but for the moment it's staying closed (with recommendations that members don't use the closed forum for general messages)

Well having worked with AC's know wonder they want a private forum, all they want to do most of the time is get out of sea drafts and become a member of the growing elite of the sick bay ranger P7RD click , oh by the way if your after the sick bay phone number ask an AC

I must say this thread has made me smile, yes I was an AC and to be honest dont give a flying feck if there is a closed or open forum. There are some comments by people who obviously dont know what they are talking about and are making a right arse of themselves and some (Minority) that have a little bit of sense included.
Bottom line is who cares, just get on with it. I am a mod on another forum, one that shows a little respect for their fellow members and doesnt go around slagging of other people just for the hell of it. It will only generate bad feeling and show a childish side of the RN to the public.

LBB listening Ch0 OUT!

Hi Lifeboatbod,

I think this thread is mostly typical mob banter (apart fom the occasional OD who pops his head above the gunnels to make some stupid remark only to have it ignored).

Quite honestly, I think it's a good idea to have a closed forum for any branch of the Andrew to discuss the inner workings off their trade without interference from any OD.

Personally, I'm not interested in lifting scabs, tying knots, deciding where what coloured wire goes where, flying bunting, the wheel spanner handbook or DC markings.

All I want from the open forums is my tot, 3 square meals a day, 9 o'clockers (minus the herrings in), a top bunk, a run ashore with my mates in Honky Fid or Singers (topped off with a fried rice down bogie street) before crawling up the midship gangway (avoiding the OOD and DRPO) and climbing into my pit.

Those were the days!!!!

Banter I dont have a problem with, the rest I cant be bothered with.
I dont see a problem with sections for S+S, WE, ME, Dabber, Comms and FAA. It is a matter of having to read through tons of chaff before getting to the meat of the post but hey each to their own.

no more posts so the whole site fails

Janner... I really don't think that will be the case. Members of a PG will still look and and post too other open threads if they're worthwhile... and, surely that has to be a good thing, if it's attracting members to the site?

Paranoia setting in. PG posts tend to be sepcialised i.e. boring for the rest, they are not "Gossiping" behind closed doors.

Of the 540 Rum Ration members (to date) a very few have been vociferous about closed groups... I presume the rest could give a feck?

Everybody to their own,let live and all that.Anyway it all sounds rather boring to me.I'm sure we can enjoy the site without getting a humour loss.

Penny,
I'd pass my own fitness test before commenting on others. "Let he who is wothout blame should cast the first stone..." etc.

Well thank you for the comment I'm P2 and passed every fitness test so far if you want I'll show you the forms, not bad for a fat and smoking 39 yr old 8)
